Designed in Canada (I think) but made in Taiwan, they're still kinda hard to find but http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=100383316&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&ci_sku=100383316&ci_src=14110944&cm_mmc=shopping-_-googlebase-_-D22X-_-100383316&locStoreNum=1249&marketID=116HD has them online. The picture at HD is of the short version. They make them in 4 length ranges.
It's hard to find good pictures.

This one from Task Tools fails to show the positive way the extension locks. It's like a heavy duty slotted shelf bracket with 3/8" increments. Then, for fine adjustment and lifting the ends of the pole are threaded in opposite directions so the whole pole is like a big turnbuckle. Capacity is over 100 pounds.
