Anybody here got the new I Pad yet.  I think it has just been realeased in the States recently & it looks pretty cool.  Probably a while before we get it here though.  Vice versa from the Festools eh  [smile]

I am waiting for the 3G version.  Probably two in my future.

Like the open version?

Didn't the 3g one come out at the same time as just the wifi one?

I like my iphone but, I am not so sure about the ipad, especially since I just bought a fairly expensive laptop.

I know several people that are using the ipad just to replace a big picture portfolio binder.

The 3 G version is coming out late April.  Will allow you to buy a month to month contract so that you can view the FOG better while on that coffee break.  No need for Wi Fi hotspots.  Just like your Iphone but much bigger.

I'm still a little ticked that AT&T doesn't allow/enable Internet tethering on the iPhone.  Great feature but I'm not sure why they block it.  It allows you to plug your iPhone into a PC/Notebook and use it for Internet connectivity.  The option doesn't even appear on the menus even though it's talked about on the Apple website.  That's just poop.

Anyway, I guess I might wait for the iMat.

Shane,

You spend too much time on the computer anyway.  Next for you would be the Ipillow  [eek] or Ibed   [eek][eek].  No cameras please!

My step son bought one on Saturday and I played with it for about 30 minutes yesterday.   My impressions:

Plusses:
- Very light
- Very fast - web pages rendering is extremely fast
- Nice features

Minuses:
- Didn't like the screen keyboard that much (my iPhone keyboard is fine)
- Thought the screen was a little fuzzy

Note that the screen may have been fuzzy because of the case which had a built in screen protector.

I considered one, but I'll wait for awhile.

Regards,

Dan.

I purchased the iPad today (amazed they still had stock!). I'm typing from it right now. I'm very pleased with my purchase. It's not a pc, but has all the iPhone functions plus more. My main business use is to use it like a photo portfolio so that my laptop does not have to leave the house!  It's not super cheap, but it will serve a great purpose to me!  I considered the 3G version, but I pay AT&T way to much for my iPhone every month!

Said this before: The IPad is USELESS without a camera! Every cheap phone has one... How the heck can you get full usage of the internet without one? I'm using skype a lot and because of that, the IPad is a no go for me.

I also have an IPhone and two MacBooks. Love them.

It's my understanding that they block it because they can't handle the extra bandwidth. They don't seem to handle what their customers are using now.

I call people all over all the time and used to get dropped calls all the time from mobile users. Now, I almost never get any except from AT&T users.

Hey Shane,

Not sure how much of a phone junkie you are.. but wait for the HTC Evo 4G on Sprint. It is going to allow the phone to function as a Mifi like device for up to 8 units. And, if you are in a 4g city, see network connections of 6-12mb down and 768kb-2mb up.

I too wish Apple would just open up the phone a little more.. All of the new smart phones with cellular plus wifi can do the same thing. It would be nice to be able to just have a phone/camera/fax-machine/internet-router/webcam/notebook all in one device. :)

I thought about one for my wife, but it does not support flash so a lot of web site content will be worthless.  So it has limitations built in.  They do look cool, but the keypad would be a pain in the arse.  I want real keys that I can feel.

I have an iPhone and love it.  The virtual keyboard works fairly well on an iphone because you type with one finger or two thumbs.  But your hands are stationary on an iPhone and braced against a case.

For the iPad however, when you try to keep your hands in the traditional typing position, there's no stable reference point.  Perhaps I could get used to it, but I like a traditional keyboard better.

Note that Apple does offer two keyboards for the iPad.  One is a dock/keyboard.  To me, a major downside of the dock is that that it only works in the portrait orientation.  The other is a wireless keyboard.  That's probably the one to buy.

Regarding AT&T, there is only one major iPhone issue on which users agree - AT&T is the pits.  They keep promising to fix their network.  To date, they have done NOTHING!  I'm probably going to wait for a new network vendor to be available on the iPhone (I think Verizon).  If Apply upgrades their iPhone hardware (faster cpu, more system and app memory), I'll buy a new iPhone then.

Regards,

Dan.

AT&T service in the Seattle area and surrounding areas is the pits!  Even though they have cool phones, it was not worth having all the dropped calls.  Very frustrating so I left for Verizon, network works much better.  I thought it was ridiculous to have 5 drops in a 12 mile commute home.  I was able to lock in dropouts within feet!  One good thing though, I was always able to get the credits back to my account for the drops.  It was so inconvenient...

You can tether with your iPhone, I do it all the time.  It isn't exactly sanctioned by AT&T, but they don't stop you either.  For instructions, go to cnet.com and do a search-there is a video clip that will walk you through it.

Dane, I'd be interested in a link if you can find the article.  Was is this one?

I did quite a few searches on the topic and everything I read said that AT&T does not support the feature (presumably because of bandwidth issues as mentioned).  The only method I found of enabling tethering was to jailbreak your iPhone, which I would not do.  While the method in that link isn't exactly jailbreaking it, it's not something that I'm willing to do to a company-provided phone.  AT&T should just support the features available and upgrade their network to support it IMO.

You don't have to jailbreak it, but you aren't using an officially AT&T sanctioned program to do it.  AT&T knows it exists and haven't ever mentioned it or shut it down, so my presumption is that they are tacitly allowing it.  I suppose assuming that not enough folks are going to find the program to make it worthwhile.  My feeling is if it is not illegal and it is published on a mainstream site like cnet, I have no problem with it.  Theoretically, you could be in violation of your contract with AT&T, but I have never heard of anyone having a problem.

For those that are interested, you just need to surf over to this site via your iphone:
