Here's a list of emergency/bug out items to always have on hand, especially when I lived in Vancouver, BC which is seriously overdue for the biggest shaker yet.

I have two large backpacks (80 litres capacity each) in an outside accessible shed filled with:

Bivouac (also called a bivi-sac) for shelter
Reverse osmosis water hand pump (you could safely drink from a puddle if you had to.
Iodine pills for treating water as a backup
Mummy bag
Therma-rest
Spare boots and clothes
MSR hiking stove (uses all fuel types)
Fire starter
Hatchet
Knives
First aid kit
Multi-tools
Flares
Flashlight (torch) windup and battery types
Radio

Also, freeze water in jugs in your deep freezer. That way you always have water on hand and the frozen jugs will help keep your freezer and food cold for many days! Extra non-perishable food.

Keep cash on hand because bank machines may not be available due to power outages.

Check on your neighbors and be sure those that are elderly or sick receive assistance as required.

Yes it is a 20KW natural gas powered whole house generator that kicks on when we lose electric - we figure that
it adds to the re-sale value of the house so not too extravagant in the long term. It actually generates 18KW with
NG and 20KW if the fuel is propane. It has come on several times in the last few years but so far no more than
an hour or so.
