Hi, I am interested to see what people on here use and would have to say is the best door lock installation kit. Thanks for any input.

Shawn

I've always just had the templaco bore master kit...it has everything for your standard hardware. I recommend getting the carbide tipped cutters to replace stock ones.

I notice you are from California, the land of the boring jig...

The Carbide is a given, and Templaco is high up, any negatives? Or what do you like best about it? Have you used any other high end ones?

I have a souber DBB mortiser, and that thing is BOSS.  It's not a template, more of a jig, but it can make a mortise of any size from as small as your bit to about 9 inches long, and go up to about 5" deep.  It sets up quickly and works extremely well with any high speed electric drill and leaves a nice clean cut-out.  I believe I ordered mine from Axminster.  It cost me maybe 240 USD.  It doesn't have anything for drilling the through-hole, but I always use a hole saw for that anyway as I imagine most do.  Search it on YouTube, there's videos of people making huge mortises in like a minute and a half.  If you wanna get saucy you can use it to make mortises for m&t joinery too.

I fabricated my own, they'll do with or without deadbolt, the 2 most common back plate sizes, 2-⅜" or 2-¾" backset, 1-¾" or 1-⅜" doors.

I offset the domino mortise so it will work on either door thickness.

I got into the trades hanging doors many years ago, but switched to carpentry/cabinetry. I still do hang doors from time to time ,mainly old contacts from way back. I still carry my porter cable door plane on the truck everyday. It's kinda like an old friend.
Can't think of any negatives to the templaco, only the plastic case it comes in. The latches vibrate to open position in transport. And the brass bushings need replacement after heavy use, I've replaced mine once in 10 years. Can't recommend anything else because it's the only brand I've ever used.

I've owned the Classic Engineering for 20ish years, very happy with it. No experience with the other options.

Minor hijack... Anyone remember a cylindrical lock boring kit that was hand cranked? Any idea who made it?

John

I just realized I forgot to thank everyone for their input on this. After much research and the help of your opinions, Atlas Machinery in Toronto Canada is now a Stocking Dealer for Templaco. We have both boremaster kits and some hinge, strike, latch, along with other accessories in stock. I really like the quality, fit, finish, strength of the boremaster jigs. We are stocking all the carbide bits also which fit many other jigs too. After much input, speaking with John at Templaco, and now seeing/playing with the units, we believe it is the best value kit around and are happy to partner with them.

Once again, thanks for you help everyone.
