Using my break from the job to make my MFT style MDF workbench, using the Woodrave base, pegboard and the 20mm Bosch hinge boring bit.  Following some earlier advice I'm going at the slowest speed on the 1400 and doing multiple plunges -- but it is still burning the heck out of the hole (hole is otherwise clean, though).  Is there a way to do it without the burn, or is that just the way it goes?

Do short plunges. Don't try to push all they way through the material in 1 shot. 4 short plunges works better than one straight plunge. I still run the bit a full speed. Found I didn't have to slow down the router, but just try not to take all the material out at once.

Thanks -- that's what I had been doing.  I just experimented with a higher speed, and it actually cuts down on the burn, though does not eliminate it.  At least the holes are properly sized.  Perhaps the Festool 20mm bit might do a cleaner job?  Oh well, next time.

The Woodrave template is an awesome jig, BTW.  Nice work.

EDIT: I was just thinking how I'd probably be dead of asphyxiation right now from the burning MDF dust if it weren't for the DC on the 1400.  I'm soooooo excited that I'm going to be cutting a couple dozen sheets of this stuff starting next week for my install.

I use a 1400, the Festool bit, and the LR32 system and have bored at least 600 holes.  I set my speed slow and plunge in one motion and I experience no  burning.  This topic as been a regular feature and I am not sure why my experience is different, but I have built a 65" X 101" table and numerous others and extensions for my MFT without issues.

Totally agree with you, I built an 8'x4' table. I used the Festool bit on the slow setting - single plunge, no burn and holes correct size.

I think that the secret may be the Festool bit.

Yep, Festool bit all the way. I tried a Bosch bit for 3 or 4 holes before giving up and ordering the Festool one. Then did my 1100x2200 top without skipping a beat.

Sounds like it's worth paying the extra for the Festool bit then.
Ben, you wouldn't have the part number for the 20mm bit would you. Thanks.

491072, Festool Euro-hinge boring bit HW 20mm

Pre-drill with a smaller bit (14/15/16 mm) & finish with the 20mm. A lot more work, but a very clean result.

Live and learn.
