i am considering building a workbench incorporating the MFT table top and rails.  I hope that this will give me the accuracy and integration of the MFT with the personalisation that a workbench will bring.  I would like to include storage drawers, extension leaves, router table and so on.

Has anyone done such a thing (I am sure that they have), and got any plans that I can use?

You might not be aware that the MFT/3 rails are also available in 2 meter versions.
They are sold as a set of two as: Tischprofil MFT/3-TP 2000 LA 496824.
You can order them from your dealer at £232.85/set.

And all other MFT/3 parts are available as separate parts.
Like the rails 472862 and 472863 and corner brackets 472861.
You can search them in the EKAT.

Do you know how we can get these in the U.S. ?

These long MFT profiles are NIANA.
It's very costly to send them over from Europe due to the length of 2 meter.
I don't think any dealer in Europe will send them over.
My regular German dealer will not even send them to Holland.

It would be cool if Festool would license a NA manufacturer, like 80/20, to make them.

If you haven't built one yet look up DIY Festool mft on Pinterest, plenty of ideas there in fact too many and will leave you indecisive about which one that suits your needs best!

I have done just about what you are planning to do (no aluminium rails) and have some videos for you to see and also if you PM your email address to me I will send the plans free of charge.

Here are the videos starting with Design and Construction:

Then completing the top (but I now have a really easy and very accurate method of doing a pattern of 20 mm holes which will be featured in a video later in the year):

Making the very simple drawers part 1:

Drawers part 2:

The free plans are available to anyone.

Peter,
what wood you use for the workbench parts?
What is top plate size on your w.bench?
and what is min size you would recommend for making kitchen cabinets?

Thanks

I use whatever wood is available, usually oak or ash. The top is 1316 mm x 886 mm. I usually make kitchen cabinets out of 18 -20 mm thick material - sometimes melamine coated MDF for the carcasses, sometimes veneered MDF for the outer parts that show. The doors are always a solid frame and usually a thinner veneered MDF. I have (a long time ago) painted MDF for effect but avoid it now.
