Butt Mortise Plane?

Brice,

There aren't many out there, and the Lie Neilson seem to be a good deal.  You could also look at a router plane to clean up the bottoms of the pockets after roughing them out with a laminate trimmer with a straight bit freehand.

Brice,

As a traveling carpenter I know you are concerned about storage space.  I just started my search, but here is one possibility that may be a compromise, but none the less:
Veritas offering

No, I don't think that will work, you need a long sole to span the mortise.

Brice,

The only other currently produced version is a wood bodied Ulmia/ECE plane. I think it is at least as expensive, if not more.

If you had any interest in making a plane, this would be an excellent first venture. Since a super wide mouth is the goal, it's almost impossible to screw up.

Thanks Kit, I bet I could screw up any plane I'd try to make myself. ;D

Again, a router doesn't have a big enough body to span the mortise.  Yeah, I'm Lie-Neilson tools are a good value.  In this economy I'm trying to be a little more careful how I spend my money.  Thanks for taking the time to look into this Peter.

You're right, Brice. None of the other tools are going to work for what the butt mortise plane will do. A full size router plane would work if you were mortising when building jambs, but wont work on jambs with the stop in place. That Veritas plane is cool, but doesn't have the sole length.
I watched Ebay for a long time, and the few I saw on there went for almost what a Lie-Nielsen does. Every time I do three or four mortises with just a chisel I swear I will buy one, but I still haven't managed to do it...

Let us know what you end up doing.

Brice,

I interpreted your post to mean you were looking to do the hinge mortises on the doors themselves.  I didn't even think about the fact that you might have been talking jambs also.

I have attached a thin piece of plexiglass to the bottom of my router plane so that I could span the distance.  Just a thought.
