Buying a Domino used through eBay

I have not studied the market for these, but is there any savings, typically, in getting one this way?  What are the risks?

There is one project in my future, only one project, for which I need a Domino, and I was thinking, why buy new when I can buy used, and likely flip it when the project is over for about what I paid for it.

I know that once one has a Domino one can find many uses, but my woodworking hobby is not that active, and besides, I have all the alternative stuff.  The benchtop mortiser, the other stationary power tools, all the hand tools with their 8000 grit sharpness, the biscuit joiner, etc.

Welcome to the FOG!  [welcome]

Your title mentioned buying one on ebay.  There have been many instances posted here of tools purchased used on ebay where the cost exceeds the new price.  Depends on the bidding fervor.  Buyer beware.  A used tool could require a new cutter or cutters depending on usage which is hard to determine accurately on ebay.

If you decide to go ebay - happy bidding!

Thanks.  I know about bidding frenzies.

Because of that, it may make good sense for me to just buy new, then eBay it away when done with project, making sure my eBay listing has great photos and fully descriptive text.

I'll start another thread for my next question, about the vacuum port.

Keep and eye on craigslist too. I picked up a CT 22 (very used but works well)  and a 850 planer looks brand new, according to the seller it was only used once and loks like it).

I got the 850 about $100 bucks less then a new one. Ive seen alot of other stuff on their too. Right now in the LA , OC area a guy has a 1400 router for sale for $400 bucks and looks new.

For example from todays:

Gene,

I buy all my tools from one of three places, Amazon, Ebay or Craigslist.

I use both my dominos daily. One unit is set up with Ron's domniplate and the other has a fence on it that I punched the pins out. My first domino purchase in '06 is the pinned model. Hate the pins. I do mostly case work and the pins just get in my way. I wanted to purchase the new paddle style fence from Ekat so I could have a pin and paddle free fence face. I was ready to purchase the new fence and I saw a used domino on Ebay for about $40.00 more than just the fence alone from Ekat.

The used domino was only the unit and power cord, nothing else. It had a few scuffs and a little wear. I cleaned it up, new bit and cord and runs just like my new unit purchased in '06.

I have yet to be disappointed in any used tool purchase from Ebay. Craigslist on the other hand, I walk away from more deals than I buy. The picture/description on craigslist is not always as the items appears in person...

I prev sold a Domino on Craig's List at a reasonable price, and it was in perfect condtition. I suggest attempting to buy one with warranty remaining.  Warranty goes with the tool.

Gene,

Think hard about whether you may want to use the Domino on future projects besides this one.  If you really doubt you will be doing other projects or have a need for the Domino, save your money for other stuff and use what you have OR like you said,  buy one new or used and sell it when done.  It will cost you like you rented the tool.  It's definitely not the wonder tool and answer to everything.  It has its place and speeds up construction processes in some areas over other tools and techniques.

Not sure about the Domino but for other Festool stuff unless it is used and abused the savings is minor and imo you might as well buy new and reap the benefits of the new tool and full warranty.
