we are not all blessed with cheap materials

I do live in the land of the hardwoods.

You must, because I sure can't find hardwood crown anywhere near that LF cost.

As an example, I priced out some 11/16" x 3 1/2" cherry crown last week for a project I'm doing for another FOG member.  It's $5.03 LF plus tax.

Who cuts small pieces of crown to make smaller pieces?

I don't care if I have a continuous support for the crown, you wont see me cut an piece off a chunk that is shorter then a couple feet.

I buy 16' to 18' lengths of crown and have yet to have an issue using the old extensions and the crown stops.

Think about pre-finished crown for cabinets.  You'll often need to cut a fair number of pieces and you usually need all of the crown you have.

Not if you ordered extra to begin with.  I always get extra so the customer has some to hang onto.  That is just me.

I know what your are saying but your making the customer spend more money just for your own benefit as you could manage with smaller pieces if you wanted to with no really disadvantage.    Example you could get away with 1 length of cornice or two but you would force the client to buy another one or two lengths maybe costing them £20 30 or even £80 more  just because you dont want to cut smaller pieces and then end up leaving large of cuts for them to throw away or to store away but never to be used again and if they where to be used again most likely to be damaged by the time they wanted to use it.

Thats just me

An extra 8' of anything is negligible in the total overall cost.

I can pretty much buy any species of stain grade hard wood crown, say 4 1/4" for about 1.50 a foot, so an extra 8 feet is about 12 bucks.

I don't think even an extra 30 bucks is a big deal.

I always figure about 20% extra material into a large crown job anyways.

Of course that is why I have about 100 different pieces stored in my shop that are all 9' long.
Yes but when you are dealling with prefinished material that comes from the cabinet factory,.......it's not cheap!
We have a custom line that charge $20.00 to $60.00 PF.  for crown molding. That can cost the homeowner $240.00 just for an extra pcs.

Here some pics of my extention wings i made.
I am planing on redoing them, but this time i will use HPL and maybe make it a little wider.

That is why I do not order cabinets.  I only get custom units from one of my cabinet guys.  An extra piece of crown that he makes and finishes does not cost much at all.

Ken- Some might cost me up to 2.50/lf but that is starting to get spendy. [big grin]

[thumbs up]

Years ago, I thought about buying a Williams & Hussey molder so I can just stick a tree in one end and molding pops out the other.

You could consider the MFT and MFT/Kapex combo instead of the UGhs, that way you can just move the taller MFT back and forth to support the larger pieces.

Or, depending on how you are setting up, if the Kapex is on a sufficiently wide level surface, just sit systainers next to it to support the workpieces.

That would be one large mould i wonder what job you would use that mould for a giant wardrobe?

Shoe molding.  [eek]

I needed 750 pcs of  2x3 Red Cedar for a Pergola I was building and I needed each one to be exactly 12'-6 3/16" long. Plus allot of other very accurate parts. My local Architectural Metals firm delivered a 20' piece of 1-1/2'' thick wall square tube to the job. I attached it to the Kapex wing with a Through bolt and festool wing nut. To support the material in between I drilled and taped the bottom with bolts hole for 1/2'' MDO supports. Once I had the stop close, I drilled and taped a modified stop with a flat head screw to run in and out. After that I cut like crazy. Each piece fit any where i dropped it into my lattice. It's long but it worked. In case your wondering I supported the whole gizmo on a Rousseau roller stand. I went with the square tube because a piece of square 'T' track that long was over $1000.
