Hi all,
125KB is too large? I have my camera set to VGA/email mode and I cannot post even one picture to show some guys here. Any help appreciated.
Thanks

Spike,

First, images take up a lot of disk space on a forum server.  125Kb is fairly large for most forums.  Some forums only allow you 50Kb.

Second, ALL digital cameras take images that are too large to post.  My camera normally pumps out 2-3Mb files.  Further, images straight out of the camera are not in the necessary condition to post.  Besides size, color casts and fuzziness are common problems.  All images need some post-processing before uploading to a forum.

Here is a tutorial that describes manipulating and posting images on FOG:http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=292.0.

Regards,

Dan.

In a nutshell, you will need to resize your photos to make the files small enough to post here.  What you use to do the resizing depends on what photo editing software you have on your computer, or what software you are willing to download, some of it free.  Give us a bit more feedback and we can help.

Hey Guys,
Thanks.
I posted a picture here a few weeks ago no problem. Same camera, same settings.
I have a Sony 7mp DSC-W7. I have no photo editing software installed on my Sony laptop. Scanner & Camera Wizard opens when I connect a USB and upload my pictures.

The picture sizes are 640 x 480 and varying from 105 kb to 157kb.

I'll see if I can post the ones that are under 150kb at my TS55 cut quality thread.

Matthew,

Is there the function within the forum software to automatically resize images? It seems to me to be theoretically possible to upload a high res image, have software on the server resize it, and that resized image is stored & used, whilst the original is deleted.

The only example of this I can think of is eBay - when selling an item, there's no limit to the image size you can upload, but the site automatically resizes it to 600x400 (or 400x600 for portrait). Obviously the bigger the initial image, the longer it'd take to upload initially, but these days that wouldn't be much of a problem for the vast majority of users.

JRB,

AFAIK, there's no software like that on FOG.  That kind of software has several limitations.  Several biggies include the issue having someone else control your pics (I can't stand that), uploading images that are 20 times bigger than the target image, and overall forum server load (I suspect that it would be pretty big).

Spike,

Trusting the camera to keep the images within appropriate limits won't work.  You need to be able to control the image directly.  And just downsizing the images to a smaller size doesn't work well either.

Below are threeimages based on the same original image.  The original image, after conversion from NEF to JPG, was 3.4Mb.  This was downsized-only using Photoshop Elements V6 to get within FOG limits:
DemoPic_DownsizedOnly1.jpg

Here's the SAME image, with about 45 seconds of image adjustments using Photoshop:
DemoPic_DownsizedCropAdjust.jpg

Here's the same image, but cropped heavily.  This only took about one minute to manipulate the image:
DemoPic_DownsizedBigCropAdj.jpg

Check out the little bitty one.    See a potential problem with the hole cut in the ply?  OK, how about the second one?  A little more obvious, isn't it?  Now the third.  It should now be obvious that I have a pretty ratty cut line.

All three images are 117-118KB.  None are great shots, but merely examples of how a little post-processing can make a big difference.

Photoshop Elements is about $70-80 and is my choice.  Other tools are available free for downloading and can do an excellent job.

Check out the tutorial for more info.  It's pretty decent.  (Of course, I'm biased; I wrote most of it.)

Hi Dan,
I deeply appreciate the time you took to do this. Thank you...........but.........I don't have any size issues on any other forum ever. Is there something we can do as a group to make this easier. I would much rather buy $80 worth of something Festool then have to invest in photo software I will rarely use.
I just took 6 pictures of the outcome of my TS55 dial indicator setup and I can't post a single one.

Thanks again much,
Spike

Spike try GIMP its free and there are lots of tutorials on how to use it. Open picture with Gimp, go to image, scroll down to scale image. Lower your size down. Save as (what ever name you want). Than upload your pic, sorry its been a while you may have to check your image properties under image to check your size. I use this with Ubuntu Linux but the site is for windows;www.gimp.org/windows/ GIMP  Hope this helps you save for more tools. Bru

Spike,

I have image uploading problems with EVERY forum site that I use.  For example, Sawmill Creek has a maximum size of 107Kb.  Other forums have max image sizes as low as 56Kb.

Commercial sites and photo sharing services  may have some utilities to auto-size the images.  But you either pay for them or you lose the copyright to your images (these sites can sell them).    Non-commercial forums like FOG typically can't afford the cost of that sort of things.  That's my experience, but YMMV.

If you want to try to motivate Matthew, that's your choice.  However, I will oppose that unless it's a user configurable option (each user can choose to use it or not).  The last thing I want is somebody messing with my images.

In any case, you don't have to spend anything to get a tool to change the file size.  Matthew and several other members of FOG use IrfanView.  It's free.

The photo tutorial includes a link to the IrfanView site and a brief description of how to use it:http://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=289.msg2422#msg2422.

Dan.

Bru,

GIMP is another good suggestion.  Dan Lyke added a section to the Photo Tutorial covering how to use GIMP to manipulate images:  Thehttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=297.0.

Hi,

This whole downsizing thing is interesting. I take pics with my Intel (model?) camera. It is  about seven years old. I use Corel Photo Album 6 to pull them from the camera. I don't do anything to them. Just attach and upload to FOG.

Thanks Dan, There is a ton of info available for gimp. If you want to learn its out there. Kind of like Google sketch up or open office draw. Great tutorials on all of them, it just takes time to sit and learn. Thanks again for the link. Bru  Here's a site for Gimp video www.designyourownweb.com/gimp-tutorial.htmTutorials  Sometimes Video is easier to follow, sometimes not! Nice that the guy offers these video's for free.

I haven't used IrfanView, but I use google's Picasa regularly.  I highly recommend it.  It will do resizing, cropping, simple retouching, etc.  I have a full version of Adobe Photoshop, but for quick things like emailing a group of pictures that I want to shrink, I use Picasa.  If I'm serious I'll switch.  Check it out:
