Carvex Dust Extraction

Hey guys,

    This is my first post here so bare with me. I recently purchased a CT MIDI from the recon sale and its been a joy to use with my Carvex PSC 420 EB. The extraction is absolutely noticeable but at the same time there still seems to be a good amount of wood left to clean up. The Carvex stays immensely cleaner with the MIDI attached to it and leaves me with barely any parts to clean (I have a slight OCD problem when it comes to keeping my tools clean) but I was expecting more I guess. Is it just that my expectations were too high with the dust extraction or am I missing a step or doing something wrong?

Are you using the dust hood on the front of the tool and the splinter guard? I still have some dust popping up etc. with both items in use but it's not too bad. I'm not sure how much dust your seeing but there will always be some....not too much but some.

Yep I'm using the hood and splinter guard. I suppose I set my standards too high? You're right though, always some dust and like I said the MIDI has made things a LOT better so I guess I'll just be happy with that.

Just one more thing and really dumb of me to ask but do you have your Midi turned up to a higher level of suction? I actually have two of those guys, one I bought new and one I bought recon for my Kapex, they are awesome DC units.

I do. And when I fired the MIDI up for the first time the suction gauge knob seemed kinda funky but I have it turned all the way to the right and when I do that the unit gets louder so I assume that's the highest suction. When I do clean up without the hose attached to the Carvex I turn the suction down a little for the noise. I hope I'm doing it right when it comes to the suction knob haha.

In my experience, my Carvex has the worst extraction of all the Festools.  But since the Carvex was my first Festool, I didn't really complain as it was a vast improvement over my previous model, not to mention the pristine cutting performance.

As long as we're complaining, however...I sometimes will simply remove the dust extraction when I'm cutting curves (circles in particular) because the hose gets in the way.  From an engineering standpoint I'm not sure how it could be done any better (maybe have the dust port attachment curve upwards at the tail?), though I imagine this problem might be mitigated through the Boom Arm (which I don't have).

    Yes, the DC on the jigsaws is not as good as on the other tools. I get quite a bit of dust dropping from the bottom of the cuts. But very little on top and none in the air.  Give it a try without the DC for a comparison.

My first tool was the carvex..

I did not have a CT at the time. I remember the dust being so heavy as i was cutting i could not see my lines and had to get close to the cut and blow the dust away as i cut.

I then rigged my shop vac and it was way better. Problem with that was the hose connection was pita so i used it like 20% of the time because i could not be bothered wrestling with a stupid hose that constantly fell off.

Now i own a CT and i use it every time. Yes i still get lots of dust on the ground btu thats it. The airborne stuff and the stuff sitting on my cut lines are gone.

I often feel like dust collection could be better. Once in a while ill take the hose off my TS and make a cut and its like holy shit how did i ever live that way!

The Carvex was my first Festool as well and it definitely was a lot worse without a CT. The CT makes a huge difference, I guess I'm just so used to watching videos with the other tools dust extraction being amazing that I was expecting it too. The MIDI has made a world of difference, I guess now I just have to get the TS so I can see the dust extraction I've expected

yup all the droppings at the bottom. cutting upside down feels really weird cause now you have to fight gravity... maybe its just me but i never got used to it being i dont like all the chips and dust all over my work/line vs being dropped on the ground.

only used a carvex once at a festool roadshow. didnt really see the dust extraction on it... actually... it might not have been connected.

i own a makita 4350 fct and the dust extraction on that is almost non existent. i tried it but the little attachment soon broke and got binned.
