Yeah Holland is bad I remember when I lived der it did rain some!

Well kick your mate's arse then, it's unacceptable he disappoints his client and leaves you with the mess. If he took the job and other jobs as well he should do the extra hours to get it done in time.

I'm curious to see the rest of this job, I think it's a very interesting project.

But he's afraid as it's constant work from the builders and he has kids and responsibility so wants to make sure he has plenty of work.

I was working on a roof with him I had to walk across the steel ridge beam to fit the rafters no scaffolding or anything in the middle I don't work like that.   He keeps telling me I'm just spoiled with my builders on my jobs but I think it's how your should work but might just be me.

Falling off a roof beacuse of lack of proper safety and support ain't going to help him keep working to feed the kids! Nice to be busy but a bit shorted on his part.. busy on unsafe project now, one slip and could be off work for 6 months!

Stay safe mate, I have done plenty on work on offshore platforms, I have seen first hand what lack of safety can cause! (the day they pressure tested a tank without checking inside (copy of people climbed inside for a kip), pressurising was fine (slowly crushed unconcious), it was when they hit the relief valve that the mess was occured, think like putting an egg in a microwave!)

I agree no point working unsafe!  I'm not crazy about health and safety and think its often over the top but I do think some things to do with your safety is a must and often it just takes longer as well when you dont have proper scaffolding setup or something.    I always at least set my tower scaffolding up in the middle so I can roll it along as I work along the ridge.

I knew two roofers that got about on crutches after falling off roofs....... you only fall off one roof. a carpenter I worked for many years ago fell off a ridge though the ceiling joists and then through the first floor joists onto a concrete oversite.he was an odd shape I guess they did not have the means to fix you up so well back then.

ALOT  More work has been done since these pictures I just thought I would upload them! I wanted to uploaded more recent pictures BUT I was working on it till 10 at night and it was to dark to take a picture then

Using my MFS rails I made a jig to router out for the gallow brackets the OF2200 is pretty heavy to keep above your head! my arms where hurting a little

Just showing how the jig worked it just sat  on the top  and then i clamped it.   Its not in the right place now as the wall plate is in the way now but you get the idea.

Alot of my festool tools are being used on this job making life alot easier  [big grin] the little Ro90 has been really handy to sand the internal curve!

Day 1 was  finish of wallplate and sanding wall plate!  Day 2 was Roof and Brackets!  [tongue]

I have to admit that I couldn't really understand where this was going (still find it difficult to figure out the structure) when I saw the earlier pictures of the base but the structure is starting to look real good.
Those curves are real nice looking, they are worth the extra work.

Could you not have done the gallows sockets on the flat before putting the posts in?Save on the arms.You would have to get all the bases perfectly level obviously.

How are those brackets fixed?

How are you going to connect the rafters to your kingpost? You don't have a kingpost shaped in an octagon...
Or are you making some sort of hip rafter joint with a tenon?

Few reasons why we did not cut the gallow sockets!  

1 we had not made the gallow brackets yet and was unable to get to the wood at the time as it was a MASSIVE pile and we didnt fancy moving everything at the time when we was fixing the posts as we didnt have much time as you know this job has been a few days here and their.

2 We are making all this up as we go along  we have an idea how we want it but its pretty much see how it looks and go from their so another reason why we didnt cut out the gallow sockets as we wanted to see how big we wanted them to keep everything in proportion

The posts where all perfectly level we didnt leave them long and cut them after as we didnt fancy trying to cut the tops after, so it was simply get the posts in position and plum them up and then measure from the base up as the base is perfectly level all round simples and then we could of taken them back down and router-ed on the ground like you said but at the Time we didnt have time and the reasons above!

No thats very true! Me and my mate did debate this originally we was going to make it completely round but thought  

1) we cant make the 141mmx141mm posts round our selfs we would have to send it off  

2) We thought it might make it difficult for use to work out everything from a round post

Octagon well  that was the 2nd option and we where going to go with that but when it came to do the job we just decided to keep it square because if we had made it octagon it reduces the size of the post making it appear less beefy.    Now looking back! Doing the curved section of the roof I kinda wish we did go with the octagon  BUT the Square posts still looks equally as nice! Ill take some pictures on how I did the rafters into the posts ill take some 2 moro.
