Church Entrance

Is the structure as in your sketch up drawing? Is the spine solid to the apex as shown?

Green oak can only be jointed with joints and tree nails. It moves to much

it can also be jointed with stainless steel pins aswell. to give a more modern look. (no good ere like)

Green Oak will eventually even eat A4, A6, 316L, 314L Stainless steel. Its the tanic acids in the wood.

Well got the Call 2 day! They wanted to give me the job cus of my presentation and apparently I showed a lot of knowledge! ha and I will be the first person they will call for any future jobs! BUT  cus  I was so much more than the other quote they couldnt go with me!  Asked what the difference was and he said £1000  The annoying thing is! I was doing it for NOTHING! I was only charging for the wood and materials and 2 days labour for another joiner to give me a hand erecting it!

So few things I can think off to why they where cheaper

1. The other quote is a large company so can get the wood a lot cheaper than me!

2. I had quoted like for like! So I got a quote for timbers as wide as 450 by 120 (did I measure it properly? thinking about it now cant see where that size timber goes lol! thats pretty big! joking!)  Any way I checked all over and couldn't see any joints so its all large solid timbers everything is made as one piece. The other company could be thinking of joining smaller pieces to cut the cost!

3.  They could be using poor grade timber?

4. They are also doing it for free but can also source timber for less.

5. Im being ripped of by my local wood merchant!  ( I will be talking 2 them 2 moro letting them know see what they say!)

6. Im getting everything cut to size as I havnt got the machinery to cut timber that size so this would of put the cost up.

7. ummm I dont know but I cant wait to see it built by this other person or company and check it out to see the standard  I kinda hope its CRAP so I can say YEAH if you had me I would of made sure its a good job! lol

JMB

think they are fobing you off because they saw your paslode [poke]

JMB it happens  :-\
Well my two pence for future... Instead of going for any steel (whatever fantastic stainless it is - it's still crap and leaves horrible black spots on oak) I would go either for soft wood big pegs or another version is solid copper rod and then tap ends like riveting. Good thing about copper is:
a. doesn't interact with oak at all
b. relatively soft so easy to make mega rivet
c. if it gets loose bring hammer to it  [big grin]
d. ages nicely turning sort of green(ish) colour.
We used zillions of copper nails and washers turning them into rivets in traditional wooden boatbuilding as well as building replicas of for instance viking boat.
It's checked empirically.

At least they called you back.
Forget it and move on.
Tim

Maybe the other company are doing it at cost.... just to keep going and pay employees who  work for even less peanuts?

Run your own race JMB. Thinking about doing this job was practice for a better paying, bigger one down the track.  [big grin]

I sure hope so!  It was a little scary I was thinking in the back of my mind I didnt want to do it but then I kept thinking I do cus every one around my village will see it and know I did it!

JMB

The flip side to that is having everyone know who did the work when it doesn't turn out very well.  The lowball bid doesn't always mean poor craftsmanship, but if you're getting underbid by that much is generally isn't the best of signs...

[eek]  I thought it was the small roof at the gateway.  I didn't realise it was the church roof you were doing  [poke]

I get prices like £60 per tonne of fallen tree. Well then I need to add a day's work of sawmill operator (about 150). Typically 3m trunk is about 3t so adding all up 330 pounds for totally green oak.
for your price I could probably do it incl material and my cut. Two weeks work of my workshop plus materials - £2330. Done and dusted.  [big grin]

£2400 [jawdrop] [jawdrop][jawdrop]

From most timber merchant Green Oak comes in at £25 per cubic foot (INC VAT) giving you potentially 96 cubic feet for that price.

Even if they were doing some machining work for you that is an astronomical price, JMB, you need a new timber merchant.

What was your cutting list??

Yes.. someone I have used
http://catalogue.chilterntimber.co.uk/category880625.html
a 6x6 inch green oak beam 3.6m long is £50 ex VAT

This site might be good to try a comprison on the cutting list
http://www.venbros.co.uk/oak-beams/

6x6 by 3.6 in fresh sawn is £64, or £95 for 3-5 year air dryed ex VAT

Evening Brett.

Was the price for all of Sherwood Forrest!!!!!!!!! [poke]

Well they          saw            (pun intended) you coming. I can get green oak 4 inch section at £21 plus Vat. You sure you did not spec kiln dried quarter sawn because that's the sort of thing i would expect at that price.

Have you been in the  Merchants and extracted the Micheal and this is their revenge [big grin] [big grin]

Was there not alarm bells when you got the quote [jawdrop] [jawdrop] [jawdrop]

Cant believe you did not question it.

Mind you I have just calculated that they may have been quoting you for. Unicon.V Beltane Grade From Longridge Pike, if that's the case it would be that price and every credit to Brett for specing such a renowned quality grade.

Later John

Mate get a different quote written up and approach them again and say that you are sorry but you just made an error on the cut list! I have had similar experiences pricing work and it can be a very cruel learning curve. They can only say no!!! You are right ...if you do make it , everone in the village will know how good a chippy you are and you will feel a great sense of pride everytime you pass it!!! Re - quote mate...you know it makes sense [smile]

God god Brett

What do you need a piece 700x120 for.  [eek]

Its a church entrace not the forming keel of the Titanic!!!!!!

Thats nearly 31" x 5" in old money

John
