I was drilling some 1/2 holes for concrete anchors on speed 3, and after finishing one of the holes, saw that the chuck was no longer spinning (was using Jacobs chuck with non Centrotec masonry bit). Tried switching it in and out of hammer mode, then switching over to Centrotec chuck, but still nothing - the trigger moved the motor, but it did not engage the drive shaft. Frustrated, I put it aside and began chucking up my Milwaukee, while I ran through my schedule in my head for when I could get to the dealer to send it in for a service call. But I decided to give it one more shot, and so I picked up the drill and suddenly noticed that the gear switch was midway between 3 and 4. I switched it back to 3 and it immediately engaged the chuck and I was able to drill the rest of the holes.
I guess what must have happened is that i knocked the gear switch as I was drilling. But it's hard for me to believe I've never knocked it out of gear before (though in regular mode --I haven't done that much hammer drilling with the pdc yet), and yet I've never had this kind of issue.
Has anyone experienced this behavior in the pdc? Is it an issue that only comes up when hammer drilling? Is it a design problem, or is my unit showing symptoms of a problem that warrants a service call?
