Confusing parallel guide instruction sheet: clamp and brass alignment screws

I've been using my new parallel guide set with pretty good success.  There were two confusing areas in the instructions that I was hoping to get some help with. I've been making smaller workpieces, so everything that I have been doing has been with the parallel guide extension set.

First, the instruction sheet diagram seems to indicate that I put one of the parallel guides onto the guide rail, and then insert a clamp in the underside of the guide rail. What does this clamp then clamp onto? It's not the workpiece, since the lock for the parallel guide also sits in the channel and keeps the clamp from getting to the workpiece.

Second, one of the diagrams seems to indicate that the brass screws are tightened to further lock down the parallel guide to the rail, so I was doing that. Between the top green knob and the smaller lock underneath I thought that might have been a bit overkill, but I went with it anyway.  Since then I've learned that the brass screws are really more for alignment/removing slop. What's the best way of setting these screws?

I've found it best to ignore the "insert clamp" nonsense. And you don't need adjust the brass screws unless there is a lot of slop in the fit of the guides and the rail.
