Consolidated Q&A for Carvex 420 Jigsaws

If you look at the photo on the bottom of page 13, both models are shown in side-on profile. The barrel grip extends slightly beyond the dust port, and the D-handle is slightly sort of it. So yes, the D-handle is slightly shorter.

No, a Trion manual was never in the plan.

I wonder why there is no adjustment for the guide-rail stop to account for slop?  That seems odd as other guide rails accessories allow for adjustment...has this been an issue for anyone who uses this attachment?

Tomorrow's the big day! If I had a dime for how many times I was asked when the Carvex would be available... Well, the wait is over.

For those who pick one up over the weekend, I encourage you to post any questions you might have.

It's sure to make Labor Day weekend feel a little less laborious and a little more like pleasure. Sorry, I couldn't resist.  [unsure]

I picked my D-Handle Carvex this afternoon. I'd viewed the Halfinchshy video so had a head start on how the tool worked.  I made only one test cut and that was excellent.

I found that I could not pop the blade out without removing the base. The splinter guard traps the blade.

This isn't a problem as I don't expect to be changing the blade often.

I'll read through the supplemental manual before trying the saw again.

Overall, I like the tool.

You will need to insert something and move the clear sacrificial splinter guard forward to eject.  If you are using the same blade you should be able to reuse it.  If changing blades and uber clean cuts are an objective, then you would be replacing with a fresh when changing out to a clean one any way.

I can't believe I'm the first to ask this question.  If you look at the pictures of the D-handle and the Barrel, they are the exact same with an auxiliary handle stuck on top for the  D-Handle version.

So, can you just remove the Handle on the D-Handle version to make it a Barrel grip?  IF not, this would have been the ultimate design making the decision quite simple.  All that would be needed is that cap to put in place of the handle when removed.

I know some festool nuts out there will need both for some reason (collectors set in 3013?) so maybe this is the reason for not having the All-in-One option.

You can't remove the D handle.  The decision of d or barrel is definitely a personal preference.  The engineers did design the D handle to be able to operate as a barrel to some degree and also incorporate a variable speed trigger.  I have had d handles all my life until I used a barrel grip Festool.  I honestly don't have a preference now and can see advantages and disadvantages to both styles based on how I use them.

Regarding blades  - if you have just bought a Carvex hopefully your dealer had the assortment pack which is a GREAT value.  If not, find a dealer who does!

Sorry I should have mentioned that you need to pull the splinter guard or remove the base (with the splinter guard).  I found myself removing the base as it is a quick flick of the base release lever and pull then you can release the blade.  I had the same "finding" you did when I first got it :)  mea culpa, should have included it in the video instead of the Curiosity Mars lander cameo :)

Just picked up my new carvex and have a question about blades.  I'm thinking about buying dricore, barricade, or amdry subfloor tiles for my basement.  These products are either OSB glued to a plastic base or foam base.  Does the standard blades that come with the carvex work with the mix materials used in subfloor tiles?  Or should I buy a specialty blade for it?  I noticed on the back of the blade package that came with the carvex that there are about 24 different types of festool jigsaw blades.  Even with the pictures on back it's still kinda confusing on how to pick the best blade.

I install a lot of Dri-Core. Use your TS for the majority of cuts. When you do need to use the Carxex use a finer blade, it reduces the backing separation.

" kinda confusing on how to pick the best blade."

You must be a genius for the blade selection to be only "kinda confusing".

I find it totally bewildering! Each blade description says it is the optimum blade for exactly the same materials. That's hard to understand.

Here is a PDF comparison of blades.  Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have the new blades on it that I can see.  Jigsaw Blade Chart

Edit:  the new Carvex blades replace the first block of blades on the second page of the PDF.  Here are the new model numbers:

499476 replaces 486551
499477 replaces 486552
499475 replaces 488015
499478 replaces 490179

Edit 2:  you can also check out page 14 of the supplemental manual for the Carvex for general blade information:

Does the stock base adjust for angle, or do you need the "angle base"?

Also, will the Trion rail guide fit the Carvex?

I have a Trion, and might upgrade, but don't want to buy the $200 accessory kit, as I'd never use most of it.

Oh, and FWIW, I'm not enthrauled with the Carvex "angle base", as the footprint of the saw seems to be only half width.

Stock base is 90 degrees only.  Trion accessories will not fit.  The attachment is entirely different.  The angle base at least will be a requirement if you ever want to cut at a bevel.  Unless a change was made from the insert for the original Carvex there is a place in the standard systainer for the adjustable base in what I would consider anticipation that it would be the most popular purchased singular base.

Thanks for the reply.

Do the Trion blades (I have allot of them) fit the Carvex?

I posted about this over in another thread.

http://festoolownersgroup.com/festool-tool-problems/carvex-problems/msg274416/#msg274416

If you are using Festool blades labeled "Trion", that could be the problem. Those blades have a shank that's thicker than other blades and may cause problems with the ejection mechanism.

So, yes, you can use them. But, you may find that they don't eject as easily. They were replaced by the new Carvex blades.
