Could the Domino be used to construct a bench?

I am constructing a workbench and I never thought of using the Domino but after reading Jerry's manual you can see in page 22 an array of Dominos.  "The leg to base joint uses eight Dominos stacked in a 2 x 4 array
while the leg to stretcher joint uses six Dominos stacked in a 2 x 3 array." so I wonder can I use this for a workbench?  I intend to use hand planes and machines to final dimension my lumber.

Any suggestions?  ???

I just Dominoed the two leg to stretcher joints for my jumbo MFT (sorry no pics yet) with two Dominos in each joint.  (10mms)   Tight and secure so far.

Hi Fidelfs,
I hope this is of use to you. I made a workbench recently for my two Leigh jigs, the D4R and the FMT. The bench is entirely constructed using dominoes, even the buttons to hold the top on. ( and the irony of using dominoes to build a bench for an FMT is not lost. ;D)
The bench is made from 4"x4" Douglas Fir for the legs and 4"x2" DF as the rails for both the top and the shelf. The top is Red Gum with American Black Walnut ends. The legs are attached to the rails using 4x8x50 tenons and the top is joined using 6x40 tenons. If you look at the side view you can still see the pencil marks for the cutting. Its absolutely rock solid and if you notice, it has wheels so you can guess it gets moved around a bit.

Alfred

Two reasons Dave,

Four of the 8x50 in two groups of two fit well into the width of the 2" wide rails, though there is no no reason you can't use 10x50 and secondly, I didn't have any 10x50's and was to damn lazy to make any. ;D ;D
Seriously, though, I find the 8x50's strong enough to handle most jobs and if I've got something that really needs the extra strength, I'll use the FMT and make something like 12x60in tandem, using a CMT extra long upcut. Bear in mind this is only my preference, 10x50's in an appropriate pattern (tandem, trio or quad) are probably strong enough to supprt the Qeen Mary.  ;)

Alrfed (Albert),

Since you're an owner of both an FMT and a Domino (who has been using them both for more than a month or so), would you mind posting a little comparison of the two? I realize there is a lot of overlap, but a comparison like this has been brought up several times on another forum I post on. Unfortunatley, there's just too much speculation in the comments that are posted over there as anyone who has a Domino hasn't had it for very long.

I don't own an FMT and probably never will (not because I have anything against it mind you), but I'm still very curious as to your comments.

Thanks.

Lou,
I'd be glad to. If you give me a day to collect my thoughts and maybe get some pics together. I'll put it in the reviews thread.

Regards

Albear (French Canadian)
