CT26 vs 36AC

I’m thinking about finally pulling the trigger on a CT.  I wear several hats including hobbyist woodworker with a shop, GC (own projects only), and property manager.  I have two older Fein Turbos with cyclones as well as a CT-SYS and CT cyclone.  My tools are often spread across several properties and get moved a fair bit, sometimes doing stints as dedicated shop dust collectors and sometimes as jobsite do-it-alls.  Obviously they don’t get moved as much as someone who moves from job to job or packs up every day, but portability is important.

I’m leaning towards the size of the 26 over the 36 AC, but I do all my own drywall work and have a Planex.  How does the 26 or other non-AC CT handle occasional Planex projects (assume cyclone)?  I’m thinking the true price difference between the models is around 400 since the 36AC comes with a hose that’s suited for Planex but less than ideal for using with [Fes]tools.  Plus the fact the 26 shows up on recon fairly often and 36AC almost never.  Anything else I should be aware of difference-wise aside from size, AC, and the hose?  Every time I make a decision I talk myself out of it…literally did two flip-flops while typing this out.

I would say that if you are going to be doing drywall with Planex, you absolutely need the AC auto-clean feature.  You cannot use cloth bag filters when doing drywall and the drywall dust will clog up your HEPA filter in no time.  It's a total mess and you'll end up having to lift off the top to bang out the filter every 30 seconds or so (making a total mess of drywall dust in your area every time)!!

Yes, definitely realize that.  I currently use the Planex with Fein, cyclone, and paper bag in front of the HEPA filter.  Works ok but eventually the super fines make it through to the HEPA filter and reduce suction.  Not sure whether the 26 would be worse or the same and how much better AC would be.  Obviously if there was a 26AC we wouldn’t be having the discussion.

So in looking at specs more closely, size/weight difference isn’t as big of a difference as I thought.  3lbs and only 1.5” in height and 0.5” in width.

Hi, we did about 850sq/ft of ceiling filled three plastic liners and multi filter cleanings, no cyclone for they seemed bulky going up and down stairs. the handle is well worth the money. Bought a long life bag macam brand when switching to wood,it alittle dusty but have saved many bags. The rotating end of the planex hose can be changed out. I use the 768135 end to run 27mm toolshttps://www.festoolownersgroup.com/ask-festool/festool-recon-question/msg690707/#msg690707https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2047675.m570.l1313&_nkw=macam+dust+bag&_sacat=0

Get the 36AC if you are doing drywall work. I'd recommend the 36 over the 26 anyways due to the extra capacity but minimal size difference. If you want something small portable, get a midi or maybe even a Makita.

The Makita VC4210L is functional for drywall work since it has an auto-clean feature and also a HEPA filter.  It is also cheaper at $729.  However, it's not going to perform as well as the Festool (especially when it starts clogging the filter).  The Makita is basically a re-branded Nilfisk ATTIX 44.  It is the same basic machine as the Milwaukee in the following tests:

Toolbuz best dust extractors

The Festool and Hilti performed the best overall, even when the fleece bags started clogging up (it kept up the CFM and suction amounts).  Several vacuums will drop down CFM when stuff starts getting full.  The Festool and Hilti keep the performance up.  The Hilti VC 15-6 X is $829 and a little cheaper than CT26 ($985).  It also has auto-clean feature.
