CXS Compact Cordless Drill - Post your questions here!

Ron, I suspect it had to do with weight and size of the brushless motor. It wouldn't be very "compact" with that motor. Likewise, the size and weight of the current interface for the eccentric and right angle chucks for the other drills wouldn't have made sense on something being billed as a compact drill.

I assume with the max chuck opening being 8mm we would most likely be buying drill bits with a 6mm hex shank as that would negate the chuck capacity limit. I already have a bunch of those so not a problem for me but I think a 3/8" chuck would have made a lot more sense from a usability standpoint but I guess it is what it is. I can live with that. As long as I have some way to stuff a half inch bit in there I'm happy. It'll be interesting to give it a test drive once they're available as it seems like the ideal size for what I want.

Hi Shane,
Many thanks for the information.  When will the "sander assortment" be offered with the RO 90 that you had mentioned some time ago?

I and others are, i am told, are holding off till we can obtain a reasonable assortment of sanding discs with the purchase of RO 90.
Can yo shed some light on this?

thank you

It goes without saying that I LOVE Festools.  I do have to say I'm a bit disappointed (correct me if I'm wrong) with some missing features on the CXS drill.
a)  Not a brushless motor.
b)  Mechanical instead of the wonderful electronic chuck.
c)  The eccentric chuck isn't offered.  The CXS is very compact and the inclusion of an eccentric chuck would "ice the cake" for getting into tight spots.

The Festool engineers no doubt have good reasons for the exclusion of those features -- I'm curious about them.  I love those features on my T15 and I would buy the CXS in a Festool heartbeat if it had them.

...it's a mechanical clutch??  Not the electronic one?  That was the whole selling point for me!!

I have a question, mainly for Shane, but anyone else can chime in.

When, when, when will you stop making all these amazingly cool new tools and let me have a little peace!!!!

I mean it, this is exactly what I want and need as a home hobby person and with my current set of tools and so was the RO90. To top it off, the price is at that perfect point where it hurts, but not enough to say no. The new stuff is killing me, just killing me. I can't stop thinking about this drill, getting ready to order it and thinking of all the little chores and projects we can do together... and the RO90 just arrived two weeks ago!!! My last three Festool purchases have been better than the first (though all great) and keep getting better - CT22, Domino and RO90. This drill is 100% sure to be next.

So, is there more new product torture on the near horizon? What else is there? Is this going to reoccur every two months all year long?

It is like Festool is living in my brain.

Don't forget the corded Carvex scheduled for June 1 also.  Just in time for Father's Day!

Yeah, Deke, sorry to say it but we have a lot of new products this year. The second half of the year should see plenty of action too.  [wink]

2011 is going to be a lot more fun that 2010 [big grin] in regards to NEW tools.

More out of curiosity than anything else, is it at least the electronically-assisted clutch like on the NiCad C12?

So Shane, why the sudden burst in new products? Did the calendar just line up on many new projects, or is this the new pace for Festool?

Doubtful. It just worked out that way. I don't have a lot of insight into what's coming down the pipe in terms of new product development. I hear a little bit about it, but I'm sure there's more than I know. Not sure that 2012 will be as rich with new products.

The now discontinued C12 does not have an electronic clutch. In the North American market, the T-series drills are the only ones with electronic clutches.

Remember most of these new tool have been available in other parts of the world for a while. We are just getting them this year.

True, Greg. But they were all released in a single year last year. I think the question was about the cadence of new product introductions.

Don't know if this has been answered. The battery looks a little different than the other models. Is the charger also different?
Will you be able to use the charger with other battery style? and vice-versa?

Yes, there is a new charger due to the battery shape. It will not charge other Festool batteries, nor will the current charger charge the CXS batteries.

Bummer ! [sad]

There are three specifications that I need before I pre-order the CXS.

1.  Would someone either please weigh the drill with battery and a chuck or specify what configuration is quoted as "1.98 pounds/0.9kg.  The German site notes that this weight is with the battery but does not state if a chuck is attached.  The ideal response would be the weight of the CXS with battery and Centrotec chuck and also the weight of CXS with battery and FastFix Keyless Chuck.

2.  What is the height of the drill with battery and chuck?

3.  What is the width of the drill with battery and chuck from the tip of the chuck to the back of the handle?

Thanks in advance for this information,
Gary

Gary,

I just weight one, with the battery and the Centrotec chuck, and it was 2.05 pounds. Without any chuck it was 1.9 pounds.

Height, with the battery and Centrotec chuck, 6-3/4".

Width, with the Centrotec chuck and no bit, 7". With the magnetic bit holder inserted and a wire detent driver bit, 8-7/8".

Shane:

Festool support on this forum is just fantastic! There are not too many manufacture that would weight a product in response to a forum question.

Thanks for the support [smile]

Well, we're only a week and a half away from the launch of the CXS. Any other questions you guys might have that I can answer?  We are anticipating high demand for this tool, so I would encourage you to preorder with your preferred Festool dealer.
