Domino 700 problem

I've been using the XL700 without any issue for over a year.  (I think it is a brilliant tool).  Sometimes I use the setting to cut a precise mortise, and sometimes I use the "just a bit extra width" setting.  When I've used the wider setting in the past, the mortise is a bit wider, but not any taller.  Which is how it should be.  Today when I used the wider setting, the domino fit was quite loose top to bottom.  When I looked at the cut I could see that the top part was smooth and even, but the bottom seemed uneven, as if I had moved the tool when plunging the mortise; however I had not.  I went back to the precise setting and the problem did not happen.  Returned to the wider setting and the problem was back.  The drill bit is in fine condition and is not loose.  It is not my technique, I've used the tool hundreds of times with no problem.  I did a test cut, making sure that the tool stayed rock solid and did not tilt at all in any direction.  Same problem occurred.  Can any one shed some light on what's happening?

Thanks,

Len

Thank you for all the details.  Perhaps someone has had a similar situation.  One more question for you though - what woods do you normally use, and is this project made out of a different type?

Thanks Peter.  I'm drilling in hard maple, which is routine for me.  Have used the XL700 in maple many times with no issue at all.

Suggest trying another size bit to isolate the problem. If another bit produces a rough mortise, the problem is most likely the Domino unit.

I would make sure it is not climb cutting.  That is typically from feeding too fast.  Could be grain in that pc of wood also.  I agree with trying another bit.  Keep us posted

Thanks, I was not feeding to fast, very slow and deliberate, same as always.  I'll try a different bit, but since the issue does not happen when I use the precise width setting, I doubt it is the bit.
