Domino Imperial Depth Scale

I wasn't going to announce these yet, because we have some more development to do....But this seems like a relevant place ;-)

Here's one of our rapid prototypes for a DF500 Imperial Slide (DF700 coming soon as well).

This is just a rapid prototype... the final version [probably] wont be blue, and will have the appropriate imperial markings (1/2" 3/4" etc)

Put me down for one please. (DF500)

I also have the domiplate so those sizes are satisfied.  Would a version with many more than five stops be possible?  Given the variations in sheet goods especially, something as close to infinitely variable as possible would be ideal.

Hi

How about one for the UK, this is something I have thought about since I got my 500 as our sheet goods are not the same sizes as europes.

What are standard sheet good sizes in the UK?    Maybe there's a need for us to create a separate "UK edition"

Depends on the material. For boards/panels;

MDF is typically 6mm, 9mm, 12mm, 18mm, 25mm and 30mm.

If MDF is veneered on one side, it typically has the same dimension as above, but if on two sides, it is usually +1mm (so 19mm etc.)

MFC is typically 15mm and 18mm, although you can get 16mm, 19mm and 25mm.

Plywood is typically 6mm, 8mm, 9mm, 12mm, 15mm, 18mm, 21mm and 24mm.

Given the reason for the question, I'd personally say for sheet goods, 12mm, 15mm, 16mm, 18mm, 19mm and 25mm would cover most common uses in the UK and mainland Europe, but would love to hear others opinions - I'm a private home user of Festool rather than a professional so might not have covered common scenarios in the trade.

What are the corresponding actual dimensions for the UK nominal ply & dimension lumber?
In NA typically they are: 1/4"ply=15/64", 1/2"ply=31/64", 5/8"ply=19/32", 3/4"ply=23/32" thick respectively.

The engineered MFC and MDF board thicknesses are actual.

The tolerances allowed for plywood mean that 18mm plywood can be anything from 17.06mm to 18.2mm, 12mm plywood can be anything from 11.24mm to 12.2mm, 6mm plywood can be anything from 5.42mm to 6.2mm; so not quite as easy a question to answer.

So the UK ply actual size tends to be about the same as the nominal size unlike NA ply which is always under size from the nominal?

I only know the tolerances, and as I don't use a lot of plywood (and only have some really cheap 9mm board in the garage) I can't speak from experience with regard to actual vs. nominal.

Perhaps someone else from the UK that uses a lot of ply can provide further information?

So which is better the Domiplate or this new Depth Scale? I guess the depth scale is more flexible as it has 6 settings opposed to  the two on the Domiplate?

I'm going to update product descriptions on our site to help clarify this.    If you primarily work in only 1/2 and 3/4" material,  The Domiplate is probably the better choice because it is a reliable way to set a specific offset and create many mortises with absolutely no possibility of "Fence drift".      On the other hand, If you frequently use material other than 1/2" and 3/4", the new thickness gauge allows you more versatility in choosing difference fence offsets...but it doesn't provide that extra "insurance" against fence drift that the Domiplate would.

apples and oranges IMO, domiplate is about a highly repeatable no slippage guide, being Imperial is just a bonus (from my perspective anyway lol). To me they are both better.
