Domino Question - from the silly to the profound

Currently building a project that has required hundreds, and more, plunges with my Domino. In the zone a few questions came to mind:

1) Does everyone else make faces when plunging, such as, sticking out the tongue  [tongue], biting your lip [unsure], others forms?

2) I understand that the 2nd and 3rd oscillation positions are intended to help with positioning when doing rows of dominos but is a 1/4" longer slot really necessary? I would be very happy with an 1/8". Anyone else?

3) How much thickness of wood do you believe should remain above or below the domino before it starts to telegraph through the surface? I have seen Lamello biscuits telegraph through to the surface. I expect that the dominos would too, so what is the safety margin?

1.)  Probably a face of concentration, but I guess I need to get the MIRROREX to know for sure.

2.)  I never use the wide setting. I think the medium at 1/8" and the wide at 1/4" would be good.

3.) The rule of thumb is 1/3 below and above the Domino thickness, but the material would certainly matter.

3) The same amount as the domino. So a minimum of 4mm. As to telegraphing, it could happen but a domino is wood not compressed wood fibre and so is not designed to expand in its slot So unlike the biscuit which will expand and stay expanded. If the Domino does swell it won't by much.

Clinched jaw.  I grind my teeth.  Dentist fusses at me every time.

I frequently use dominoes to speed and simplify assembly.  For me all of the 1/4" is necessary.  I'll even go with the wides setting on both sides because it makes the joint looser which is sometimes a good thing.  But even with the wide and wide a dry fit domino assembly is more rigid than an equal number of biscuits.

Never had telegraphing with biscuits or dominoes.

1.  Grimace and grind my teeth
2.  I use the regular slot on one side and a wider slot on the opposite if I think I might have to adjust things.
3.  The domino doesn't expand like a biscuit, so the likelihood of telegraphing through to the surface is much less with the domino; the 1/3 above and 1/3 below is a good rule of thumb, however.
