Domino & the Craftsman Style

My 1st post here,

I am seriously considering getting a Domnio. I plan to build craftsman style furniture and would like your opinions on how useful the Domino will be for this.  Specifically, I am wondering if the Domino can help to make the traditional large through tennons which are one of its trademarks.  How would I square off the ends without creating visible gaps?

Not sure why you want to square off the ends. Most craftsman true tenons have chamfered ends. How many people are going to notice if the tenons are through or not?  :-X I just got done building a Norm's version of a craftsman mirror with through tenons, and I wish I had the Domino so I didn't have to file the tenons to fit the mortise.

I agree with Les. Why do you have to square off the ends? Having them rounded might look better in some applications. Otherwise, if you really want them squared off, just use a sharp chisel. You wouldn't be taking off much material, so it should be fairly easy and quick to just knock off the corners.

I just got my domino yesterday and haven't used it but if I wanted to make a project like this and wanted through tenons, I think I'd use the domino in the standard manner and then make a shallow mortise and false tenon on the exposed side.

I think if you made your own tenons, with the larger tenon, it would work OK.  It would take some fussing around with it, but I think it would work.  Those types of joints tend to be a little fussy anyway, so you would save time with the mortise and maybe a little with the tenon.  Cool idea !  I'll have to try it later this month.
