I am feeling stupid. I am trying to domino slats on a cradle side that are 3/8's x 1 1/4 with 5 x 30 dominos The opening for the cutter is more than 1 1/4 wide....what trick can I use? Thanks

If I understand what you're trying to do . . . You are going to cut a Domino slot in the frame to fit the slat into? Do you have the setting on the narrowest slot possible?

If so, you will need to size the slats to fit the slot cut by the Domino. The size of the slot is designed so the Dominos fit tightly, not for your alternative use of the tool.

Seems like a good idea as long as you make the slats to fit the whatever size the hole is.

I think he wants to put 5mm Dominos into the ends of the 3/8” thick slats.

It’s just a cradle and there will be a lot of slats so the thin cheeks of the mortises will be ok, barely.
There better thing to do would be to shape the slats into long Domioes.

To put Dominoes into the ends of the existing slats make a jig.
Start with a platform about 6” longer than the slats then put another raised platform on top that is about 1” longer than the slats.

The machine will sit on the lower shelf and butt against the upper platform. The key is to make top of the raised platform 10mm minus 3/16” higher than the shelf so the bit digs into the center of the slat. (Double check my specs first  [blink])

Tack on some guide rails to keep the slats square and centered on the bit and add a stop to butt the slats against. With the slats captured on three sides you can hold them down by hand while mortising but you might want to add something to keep the machine from tilting away while you change slats.

Seems to be that the 4 mm dominoes would be more appropriate in a 10mm (3/8 ") stock. This will leave 3 mm walls rather than the 2.5 mm walls of the 5mm dominoes, assuming that you were centering the bit properly in the first place.

I have switched to 4mm and built a jig to put the slats in for mortising. I was worried if I made the slats the tenons I would get cracks from shrinkage. Thanks!

[member=72164]gmanoc1[/member] Little over 4 years ago I made a crib for my granddaughter and did the exact same thing. I made a simple jig for my Domino 700XL that attached to the Seneca Domiplate. This was before the Dock Plate was offered. Worked perfect - like a production shop. (if interested PM me and I can dig up pic's of it)
