Dominos for exterior

Was just curious if its possible to use the dominos in an outside planter box. Wood will be made from cedar.  Was also debating on using landscape timber. Wonder if that wpuld hold.up well for long time w the domino? Land scape timber i wouldn't need to stain or paint i presume?

For outside use you can use the domino's in sipo wood

I did this a year ago using Cedar for the frames of my planter boxes. Worked amazingly well, so I also used them in the frame for my raspberry trellis.  Just make sure you use waterproof / exterior rated glue.

The Ipe benches I made years ago are still doing well. I used Sipo tenons with Titebond III. I have not worked with cedar, but with Ipe, I had to clean all the mortises with alcohol before applying glue. I was using a lot of tenons so I just bought the package with long sticks of Sipo and made my own tenons. I cut them to length and chamfered the ends.

OP, I used Sipos when they were first available to build a gate and that gate is still in good shape. I don’t recall how long ago that was but I’m guessing close to eight years ago (?)

Thanks for all the input guys. The mrs. Wants me to use acrap wood we have. Unfortunately her late father could literally make something out of nothing. She understands thats not me yet anyways but dont want waste. Im going to use the beech tenons bc  the smalleat sipo is 8mm. This is such a small box its 1/2" wood.  Lets see what happens will be interesting.. also great work om the planters

Just a thought, but it’s not too hard to make tenons yourself. If you used cedar scrap to make tenons, they should last longer than beech.

I'd echo Birdhunter's thoughts and make the Dominos from cedar...pretty simple. The edge radius isn't mandatory, just 45º them on the edges.  [smile]

If you do make your own Dominos, you are making something out of nothing.  [cool]

Well the OP was looking for tenons smaller than 8 mm.

Personally, I'd just save some time and use the Festool sipo versions, especially for any structural application. Unless you're making hundreds of items, a bag of sipo Dominos for a project is less than $50.

I made some aluminum Dominos but that was before the introduction of the D8 knockdown connector.
