I needed some drill collars so ordered a set from Amazon. They were trash. Thanks to Amazon, the return process was easy.

I watched a video on a guy making his own.

I cut off segments from a 1” dowel. I chucked them in my lathe and used a center drill to start the drilling. I drilled through each segment using the selected bit size.

The key is to let the bit extend out the segment by the depth you want to drill then butt them against the drill chuck.

The trick works.

That's what I usually do, but it's still not great. The flutes pack up with debris and reqires some fiddling after every few holes. It's no worse than metal stop collars as far as that goes though and can't slip to change your depth.

Was it of this type?:

.. Was thinking of trying out one set, similar to this in the photo.
And yes, the Saturn rings packs sawdust pretty well..

I was thinking the set-screw type like a Kreg jig, but they all still suffer the pack up thing. The Kreg doesn't because the jig itself stops the bit rather than the actual workpiece.

I've used the plastic drill stops (about $10 Cdn a pair from LVT), and they won't mar surfaces like metal collars. Made of plastic, they're not as robust as metal ones or shop-made hardwood stops, so use them with care, and don't push the drill too hard into the workpiece. I like their adjustable feature for bits of varying diameters.

Snip.
I seldom have to return any purchases (online or in store), but when I do, Amazon's return process is pretty simple and easy. Often they also offer a replacement option for a defective item, and that also often solves my problem.
