DWC-18 First Project Experience

Hi,

So over the course of the day all screws arrived.

Festool (coarse) collated drywall screws (I had those), Adunox collated OSB/plywood screws (given to me by Adunox), Hilti (coarse) collated screws, Hilti (fine) self-drilling drywall screw, Hilti (fine) drywall screw. (All Hilti screws given to me by private party).

I pretty much expect all of the drywall screws to either fail or give me real trouble. Except for the Hilti maybe because they especially advertise these for wood/wood applications. We shall see. Especially because they seem to be pretty much identical to the Festool screws. The Adunox should work like a charm - but we're going to see that, too.

I couldn't get any collated Spax, they were out and would only produce them if I order 40.000 screws... in hindsight this was a blessing because they only make them for the "Coil"-System so I couldn't have used them anyway with the DWC.

I built this little "wall" ;)

I have a lot of sanding and painting planned for tomorrow, but I will try to squeeze the DWC run in between so I can upload the video on Sunday.

Kind regards,
Oliver

Hi,

here's the promised video.

I don't know why your friend had so much trouble sinking (even drywall/sheetrock screws) into OSB [member=37411]ear3[/member] - but the DWC is definitely not causing the problem - it performed like I expected.

As [member=1674]Peter Halle[/member] pointed out, using a collated screw with recess cutting head is to be preferred for this kind of task, but what can I say...

I used Festool's collated coarse drywall screws, Adunox collated OSB screws (of the preferred type), Hilti collated coarse drywall screws, and then just for fun: Hilti collated fine drywall screws with drill tip and Hilti collated fine drywall screws.

I did make one mistake: I didn't change the bit from PH to PZ on the first 20 Adunox screws, that's why 2 kept standing out and other one wasn't sunk. I changed the bit to the correct one (PZ) and drove some more - no issues. I could punch myself for this, I had it ready, but I just went on without changing at first. Forgive me, this was in between another project... Oh, and I head one misfeed with the Hilti screws...

Without further talk, here's the video:

Interesting -- it must have been the screws then.  I forget which brand they were -- maybe Hitachi?-- but they were not Festool screws.

Many thanks for the video demonstration and correction.

great video.  pretty much as I would have expected.  I had issues early on with proper technique. (I am a woodworker, not a drywall installer).  I built out a basement last winter pretty much to keep busy during cold months.  Even with my bad technique early on, I saved days with the DWC-18.  It paid for itself.  Nice to see the OSB response, as well.

I've driven a few hundred 4.5 X 50mm chipboard screws into 11mm OSB on studwork and found my 2500 was at its limit doing this and I had to be super careful to line the drill up properly. Lots of cam-out with the pozi 2 head, too. All the plastetbaording I've done with it has been great though. Particularly driving about 1400 35mm screws in a day puttting up a big ceiling.

One gripe is that festool don't make a long square drive tip as I understand it.

Yeah, I had a lot of cam outs until I got the hang of it.  I ordered a bunch of extra bits.  But then again I didn't have any more issues after I got used to it.

I just picked up the drywall gun and I like it. It’s a good tool and it gets the job done. You don’t have to keep reaching for screws. Just out in a line of screws and go.
