Education and Classes

Shane, although it is marvelous that the May Doors and Drawers class in Henderson/Las Vegas filled immediately, it makes me sad that it has been over 24 hours and the Cabinet Class still have spots.

FOG Members trust me, an Cabinet Construction class with Steve Bace as the trainer is the experience of a lifetime! When I participate last November that was the debut of the new facility on Gibson. I have been building and designing cabinets since 1946 and doing so aided by Festools since 2006. I not only had a great time and made many friends during the class, I also learned useful alternative ways of building cabinets.

Back at my shop what I learned from Steve, and also Brian S. who flew in from Lebanon to assist, about the art of training cabinet makers will stick with me the rest of my life.

Bottom line is to rust to sign up before the spots are all taken. Last year there were 4 teams of 2 during training. This year there are only 3 teams of 2, so everyone has more room to work. This reduces classes to just 6. Solid Surface was filled within an hour. The first Las Vegas Door and Drawers filled within 2 hours. Try not to be left out!

Still a couple of spots left for the Cabinet Construction class in Vegas on 5/23. If you're interested, sign up online at http://www.festooltraining.com.

Could be a couple spots open still because some may have wanted to do cabinets + doors & drawers back-to-back, but doors & drawers filled up immediately - maybe there are people waiting for another back-to-back opportunity?  Regardless, I'm guessing the remaining spots will fill up soon.

So I'm signed up for doors & drawers in Henderson along with ccarrolladams and I believe GPowers.  What other 3 participants are out there yet to identify themselves?

Indeed, Lumbajac, that is the major mystery.

The more the participants can communicate before the class, the more all learn. Besides the class is a change to make new friends.

I would love to hear from the others who will be attending.  I would love for the attendees to post more here on the class information.

But alas, not everyone going to the class might be a Fogger, and you are not required to post info.

Rats!  Gotta start working on both of those! [big grin]

Peter, we fully understand that some folks do not post. My understanding is the policy of FOG is that we do not mention the names of fellow participants without express permission.

Each of the classes I have attended had different attitudes. In one class three folks besides me granted permission to use our names to anyone writing about the class the two of us taking pictures made sure to ask permission and only photograph those willing to be shown, with or without being mentioned by name. Keeping such information in mind is as vital a skill to a photographer as correctly setting the exposure.

What I hope to express to FOGGERS who have not yet participated in Festool Training is that the more effort and friendship you bring to the class the more benefit you will receive. Information is shared not just in the desk area of the centers or in the work room. It happens in the transport van, at the class dinner and also in hotel corridors and bars/restaurants.

All of us have our ways of doing things. It is none of my business why some attending classes do not want to introduce themselves. Who am I to judge?

When you get to class, the names of the participants will be shown on a sign board. In Henderson it is on the wall next to the inner door from the mud room. In Lebanon it is a portable sign which can be included in group photos. I always take pictures of the sign, but I do not post those photos. I respect privacy.

I think that there is a possibility that I was misunderstood thru my poor writing.

Not everyone who attends the classes is a member of this forum.  I wish that every member of this forum had a successful opportunity to attend classes.  They are great on so many levels.

I totally respect the privacy of members and never want their privacy violated.  I happen to post under my own name, others do not.  That is great with me.

What I admit has disappointed me (my disappointment might be non justified) is that attendees at classes have not shared as much of what they learned as I would have expected here on the forum once they returned.  I have seen some of the stuff produced in the doors and drawers classes and would love to have seen here a description of how they were made.

Perhaps it is just me and my hope that others who have great experiences or knowledge will share.

If those who attend don't want to share knowledge that they acquired in the classes so as to benefit others, that is their decision.  I just wish there was something that I could do to change their minds.

You can bet that I will be taking a lot of pictures. I think it is great to share here, but it also helps me remember what I did in the class. As a weekend woodworker it is harder to remember what I learned if I use it infrequently. The photos help my memory a lot.

So you may need to wait until late May but there will be photos of the Door and drawers class posted  [wink]

I, for one, find it tremendously valuable to have the interaction with those in class, even after the class is a great memory.  It's a big positive to be able to discuss issues and answer questions with those that may pose them, and pose questions of our own.  I do respect the fact that some may wish to remain anonymous, although I haven't experienced meeting anyone with that requirement.  (Any CIA employees in the Doors & Drawers class later this month?)

[smile]

I tried to sign up for the door class but it was full, so I got a spot in the cabinet class instead.  Looking forward to meeting some other folks from FOG.  I love my Festools and check this forum often for tips and advice, just not much of a contributor. Maybe that'll change after the class and I learn a few things and find some time to post.

I just took the Intro To Festool class in Lebanon.  What a great experience!  The other members taking the class were great, all employees at Festool we met were very friendly, the building itself is beautiful and the instructor, Brian Sedgeley, really knows his stuff.  The only complaint I had is that Brian wasted too much time talking about how much he loved the New York Yankees and his "man-crush" on A-Rod!  ::)

Seriously, I thought it was a great experience and very happy I made it.

Thanks Festool!

Just had to take a moment and say THANK YOU!  What a great class, that is the intro class.  Brian, you are one of a kind and one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure to....well be instructed by.  Can't wait to take a door and drawer class later this year.  And hey, New York...hope you are able to cope that molding when you get back to work on Monday.  Always remember you have great talent !

Kit,
[welcome] to the FOG.  The classes are addictive aren't they.  Brian - and Steve - are a hoot and they make learning fun.

Enjoy your time at future classes.  Maybe we will meet at one.

Peter

Peter,

Thanks !  I also hope to meet you some day.  If you ever need a girl's recommendation for taking the class, just let me know.  I am still talking about how great it was.

Laura

(KitC)  Someday, I will tell you the story behind that   [smile]

Laura,

Glad you enjoyed your class.  I have some unpublished video clips from a couple of classes that I view and chuckle at when Brian is being himself.

You can tell that story when you are ready! [smile]

Let us know if we can help in any way.

Peter

Early on, just after signing up for the Drawers and Doors class at Indy, I learned I was required to be a jury duty that week.

As anyone who has been to that experience knows, it is almost like being in the military...hurry up and wait.  After much consternation and vascillation I contacted the Jury Clerk and explained my dilema to her. I could go to the Festool class or Jury Duty. Hmmm.

The Festool Gods must have been smiling or she must have been a FOGer as I was allowed to reschedule to a later date. Whew! That was close. [big grin]

I had the same problem for the Cabinet class last November I got jury duty delayed but not canceled.

Hey!

There is Doors and Drawers Class going on today and tomorrow!  Hopefully we will hear from the attendees!
