Everyone,
Forums cannot stand still!

The main bedrock structure of this forum is set and stable.  But I'd like to begin adding some small enhancements here and there to make the forum a little friendlier, spruce up its appearance, and give more of a Festool-like theme.

As these changes develop I'll make a note of them here.  People should feel free to comment on any of them, or make suggestions.  This discussion can become a reference for the changes.  As always, I like the idea of having the forum be a representation of the community's interests.

Enhancements That Are Done:
You'll notice that the "offline" and "online" status graphics are different.  Instead of a green box, you'll now see a little human, who kind of looks like a Festool employee when you're online!

Online: [attachimg=#1]

Offline: [attachimg=#2]

If you have a suggestion for a different graphic, feel free to post about it.

Future Plans:
I would really like to replace the header graphics.  This is the entire region above the main menu bar.  The current design has never been satisfactory to me!  I've experimented with a few possibilities, but I am taking my time on this, because I don't want it to be changing every week, as it is a big part of the visual identity of the forum.  I'm thinking it would be interesting to ask members to submit graphics for the header, which is a nice way of bringing members into the whole discussion of what our forum looks like.  I need to put together the specs, and then we can do this.  Stay tuned!

I'm also planning to update the dark blue bands you see on the board listings, as well as some of the background coloring.  More on this later.

Matthew - One thing I'd like to see change is the "Total time logged in" line in the header graphics area - I'd like to see it go away.  Thanks.

It's kind of like iTunes though, not that I'd listen to seven days of reggae tunes, but it's nice to know I have them. But if you want it gone I can certainly get by without it D-dub.

Being a numbers freak or maybe just a freak I love the total time logged on portion. :D Fred

Matthew,

First, I like the online/offline graphics that you showed in your post.  However, they don't show up.  The old boxes are still there.  What's up?
Edit: Just rechecked.  Now they show up.  VERY NICE!

Second, I'd like to see the Total Time Logged In moved to the user profile.   This will free up one line of screen space, but still allow users to see it if they wish.

Third, move the "Show new replies to your posts" over beside the "Show unread posts since last visit". This will free up an additional line of screen space.

Fourth, regarding the header area, I assume that you are including the forum name bar at the top.   It's reasonably attractive, but it lacks a little punch.   Perhaps one option would be something like the attached hacked up image.   It shows multiple Festool tools and emphasizes the "Tool" aspect of the forum.

Regards,

Dan.

They aren't showing up on my screen..... :(

You need to clear your cache. If you are on windows click CTRL + refresh button.

I'm trying to find a graphic that is neat and gives the forum a more distinctive appearance the moment you see it, but which also can contain all the vital action fields in a more compact area.  I'm not a graphic designer, so I have to rough my way through these kinds of things.

A programmer acquaintance of mine has an SMF forum with a header graphic that does all the things I'm talking about.  Follow this link to see what I mean: Sample Site

I use this to illustrate the direction I want the FOG header to go in.

Matthew,

I looked at the page in the link.  I like it, but it uses a lot of space.  To me, that's a big negative.

Dan.

If you put the two forums side by side in your browser, you'll see that the "Computer Pros" header actually takes up a little less space over all.  Remember, by designing it that way, he's getting an elegant top-level graphic, all the sign-in fields, and the search field all in a compact graphic that's 600 (W) x 130 (H).

But I could put in a smaller graphic in this forum.

The menu bar on the sample page (Home  Forum  Help  Search etc) could certainly be made narrower (top to bottom). Seems much wider than it needs to be and wastes a lot of vertical space.

Hi,

The sample forum header doesn't strike me as being all that great.  As far as updating the FOG header- I like the Guide Rail. It sort of embodies the Festool system , and is a good shape for a tital graphic. I think I would just updat it to an FS/2. Maybe make it go all the way across.
I also like the current shape, size , and spacing of the menu bars. They are easy ( for me) to read, and are not too close to other buttons. I hate it when I have to carefully "pick out" what I want to click on. I like the curved corners that look like tabs rather than rectangular boxes.
As far as colors go - PLEASE don't go with some type of green or black combination. I have been on sites with this type of coloring and it gets hard on the eyes after a while!  I kinda like the various blue tones, or maybe some pale green tones.
Overall I would have to say that this site has one of the better looks that I have seen/used.

The little online/offline people are nice!

Matthew,

I think Computer Pros forum has several positives:

- Header Bar:  I like the idea of having the search and login boxes in the header.  That could make up some of the space and allow a more distinctive header.

- Header Bar Graphic: The graphic that I had in mind would be similar to the Festool USA graphic:http://www.festoolusa.com/.  Perhaps Festool could provide the basic graphic and we could modify it.

- Two-color Toolbar: The two colored button approach to the sample forum toolbar makes sense and separates it nicely.  We could do the same: Green for "Home", "My Messages", "Calendar" and "Gallery" (the core functions) and blue for "Help", "Search", "Profile", "Members" and "Logout" (the utility functions).  Move core function buttons to the left and utility function buttons to the right.  That should improve toolbar usability.

-Single-line Borders: One subtle, but very nice feature of the sample forum is that all of the boxes have a single-line border.  Besides giving a little more screen space, it yields a much cleaner look!

Regards,

Dan.

A couple of forums (fora ??) I visit put randomly selected pictures from their equivalent of the gallery on the header.  I like that a lot - it stays fresh and leads me down threads I might not otherwise visit.

Another - only very loosely related idea - sawmill creek sponsors 'mass buys' for their members.  Vendors give good discounts in return for a guaranteed number of sales.  I wonder if Festool would participate in something like that?

Everyone,
Lots of good ideas here, and I'm watching this discussion and trying to think of which ones we can implement.  Keep the ideas rolling!

Hi there, I am quite new to this forum but one feature I like from other forums I have used is a "unread posts" button that filters only the new unread posts so for instance you don't need to go back to page one of the section and then pick the next page to see the unread posts. Just a thought.
