How do I get a bit unstuck from the sds chuck?

I tried putting Wd-40 in the chuck and soaking it but it still won't free up the bit.  Any ideas?

If it's possible to put the drill in reverse, try putting the bit under load in reverse. Other wise, a little "percussive" maintenance might be required. This can be a rap directly to the bit, or clamping a set of locking pliers to the bit, and striking them....

Out of curiosity, is it a drill bit that's stuck, or a chisel?

It's a drill bit.  I have tried running in reverse and using a vise grip with hammer and no luck so far.  I might see if I can take the drill apart to take the chuck apart.

For anyone reading this: DO NOT PUT WD40 into SDS chucks. Ever.

It will dissolve the fat which is essential for lubricating the chuck. That will not only damage/destroy the chuck afterwards, but can cause the bit to be stuck even more.

If you do get a bit stuck, try to wiggle it back-forward, all kind of ways. Do NOT use force. It got stuck because some piece of dust got caught in the mechanism and prevented the balls/pins to release it.

DO NOT USE A WISE as you can destroy the chuck or even the drill. When the bit is stuck, there are metal components preventing it to go out - you cannot force them without destroying the chuck (and likely the drill with it).

Some hard learn lessons from when I was "smart" and made minced meat out of my first hammer drill ...

As for prevention. SDS drill bits move in the chuck so must be always greased a bit. Use the hammer grease for the bits part in chuck regularly if you see it being dry. If you do not have the hammer grease, some general gearing grease is better than nothing.

But avoid silicone oil or WD40 as these will wash out the grease from inside the chuck, making it run dry.

If you are in 3 year warranty, and cannot get it out, your best bet is to send it to Festool. Before going at it with a wise in a destruction mode ...

I would try carefully dissassembling the sds chuck, to see if something is keeping the ball from dissengaging.


There's also a video of a guy removing a stuck chisel, the end of the chisel had become wider (like a mushroom) so he couldn't remove it anymore. (I'll ad a link to that one if I come across it again)
