Festool Drill Chuck issues and PDC drill gear problems

I have 2 issues here.

With the PDC drill, the selector switch to go from drill to hammer is not working correctly.  If i have it in drill mode and while using it, the switch will walk its way over and put itself into hammer mode.  Its not good, it sounds terrible when this happens.  I have to hold the selector switch while drilling to make this happen.  Any ideas?

Then, with the jacobs style chuck as shown in the picture, i have 2, one brand new and one old, i think both are broke or have the same problem.  They are both stuck fully wide open.  Meaning they are ready to receive a bit but i can get the jaws to close at all, they are stuck.  With both i can spin them to get 1 click in either direction.  Whats killing me is, they both went bad on the same day.  I know how to use and treat a drill, they have not been dropped, i have no idea why its happening.  Each time it happened i was switching bits, removed the bit, went to put a new one in and i can’t get them to close.  I have a PDC and a T18, the chucks came from those drills.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.

The keyless chuck can be stuck/locked in the open position when being opened "too far/wide", this usually happens when you run the drill to open the chuck.

Before sending anything in or stopping work/ buying a new chuck, please try what I explained here:

Hi,

Sounds like it's stuck, kinda "locked", in the open position because it was opened "too wide", that's why the sleeve turns relatively freely.

What you should definitely try before disassembling is to grab the sleeve and give it a really, really quick and hard turn in the direction where it would close the jaws.

Here's a great illustration of what I mean:=48s

Kind regards,

This might fix your problem instantly. And you know how to "correct/fix" it if it should ever happen again.

This is common for many "locking" keyless chucks, by the way.

Oliver

In regard to the selector switch, it shouldn't do that (obviously), doesn't happen on mine. Is it really loose? I'd say send it to Festool for a repair, definitely if still under warranty. Or if out of warranty and if you feel comfortable enough, try to repair/trouble shoot it yourself. Bad news is, the selector it's only available by buying the gearbox housing (Part 6 in EKAT) and if the problem is within the gearbox (Part 9 or 13 (with some other stuff) in EKAT) you'd need that, too. Part 6 is 62,90 Euro, Part 9 75,37 Euro, and with other stuff together as Part 13 for 84,37 Euro)

Kind regards,
Oliver

I couldn’t understand a word the guy ways saying, it sounded german.  It looked like he was trying to spin it real fast to unlock it? Is that the case? Care to put in words what he is trying to tell us?

Yes, it is German - it was just meant to illustrate what I wrote in my other post. Just grab the sleeve of the chuck, and give it a really quick & hard turn to overcome the lock.  [smile]

It's a common "issue" with many of the locking keyless chucks.

Kind regards,
Oliver

That worked!!!! Thank you so much.

It took awhile and it finally worked when i put the selector switch for clockwise or counterclockwise drill rotation in the neutral position.
