Festool Newbie - DF700 XL Good For What?

Thanks Peter Kev and Tiny shop. All great advice I keep being amazed on how generous everyone is on FOG with their knowledge and willingness to share their experiences. I will keep the 700 on order.

I intend adding the cross stops and trim stops is there any reason not to?

I also intending buying the systainer assortment for the 500 (498899) which includes the 8mm & 10mm dominos and I was also going to buy one of the XL Domino systainers. As the 500 one does include 8mm and 10mm I was going to get the systainer for the larger sizes (498205) namely 12mm & 14mm then I am covered. However, I also intend getting some of the Sipo tenons as the gates will be outdoors, So my question is how critical is it to get the sipo tenons for outdoor work?

I would get both of the DF700 domino assortment systainers as the cutters are included and it gives you more options when planning joints.

Thanks for the reply. So would you get the two XL domino systainers plus the 500 systainer or just the two XL systainers

I did. If you get the Seneca RTS500 there's no harm in getting all 3 sets ... apart from wallet damage!

The shims for the 700 from Seneca http://www.senecawoodworking.com/products/domi-shims-for-domino-xl-df-700 would do you a good turn too ... particularly on cabinet work.

Something I've been meaning to do is get some of the lengths of Mahogany tenons that you cut to length ... the largest of these would suit your big outside stuff!

If you are going to keep the DF500 then get all three sets - the cutters are in there.

I would definitely get the Trim Stop - I use it a lot and it can be used at right angles to put a slot in a rail that then has a framing piece coming away at right angles (I showed this in one of my bench building videos).

I have the Cross Stop but have only used it once. It is well made and accurate but I use the MFT3 for my jig work.

I also have both Dominos (Domini??). The 700 feels a little more refined, maybe a little smoother. Definitely prefer the fence on the 700. In mid sized joinery, where the two overlap, I always use the 700. That being said, I don't regret for a moment having both.

I have decided to get all 3 sets of dominos. I figured it made sense then I am covered. I am not sure about getting the shims maybe I should get the machine play about and then decide although I am definitely going to get the 500 adaptor from Seneca. Thanks again for all the advice its invaluable

I agree totally and I'm almost 70 years old but, the balance of the 700 is sure nice.  I use both but my go to is the 700 unless I need 4mm or 5mm joints.

A bit off topic but didn't want to start a new thread, in the Domino XL assortment D12/D14 (part number 498205 ) do you only get the 14mm cutter or is there a 12mm cutter in it too? The Domino XL 700 ships with a 12mm cutter, is that right>?
