Festool on "Ask this old house"....again

Seeing Festool on TOH or ATOH is what sparked my interest in these tools mostly the C-!2 drill. I will also note that the plumber Richard Trethewey uses the drills also. I don't feel so bad loving thesed tools being an electrician. [big grin]

Greg,

You are correct.  See my earlier post.  I believe that those posters who are talking about seeing Festool on TOH and ATOH are seeing older programs.

Sponsorship of Public Broadcasting programming is a very sensitive issue in this day and age.

Clearly there are significant differences in product placement policies between This Old House and Ask This Old House.

The new season of TOH is all about the "Bedford Project" restoring a large home dating from the early 1700s. It is still in the demolition and excavation stages, with setting of forms. Consequently they have not shown use of any framing or finish carpentry tools. A primary sponsor of TOH is Stanley Works, who own DeWalt, PC and many other brands. Still, in the season before this TOH did use some Festools when they were appropriate.

The current new season of Ask This Old House has also started. While making repairs for viewers on site Tom Silva in this new series has used several Festool drills, a Kapex and a rotary sander, as well as a CT36. That was interesting because while using a 6" hole saw Tom had the lady of the house hold the tool end of a 27mm AS hose under the hole. Personally U would have used a 36mm hose and attached a light-weight cleaning tool such as the cat 440 406 Plastic Upholstery Brush. Since that brush only has bristles on one side of the rectangular opening for me it makes an ideal temporary dust collection shroud. The episode before while repairing a stair rail system Tom also used the tool end of a 27mm AS hose first to clean up some dust and then apparently to such away the fumes of spraying clear coating.

The important thing to Festool fans and FOG is that the dark blue and green was very clear.

ON ATOH, virtually all plumbing repairs involve a Festool drill. This has been the case since 2008.

I just saw that episode of ATOH where he uses the vac to pick up polyurethane overspray.  Did anyone notice he started with a Dewalt and finished with Festool.  Amusing...

It is not live TV.  We all might be surprised how many takes are done for a simple job.  That lady might have 20 coats of clear on her steps.

I watched an episode last night of TOH about the Bedford Project.  In it Tom Silva was testing and repairing the rotted foundation sills.  I noticed the dreaded yellow drills being used exclusively, both the impact and regular versions with a paddle bit.  I'll grant you this was not finish carpentry nor does Festool offfer an impact driver.  So I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

By the way, I remember kind of a funny incident during the Auburndale project (I think).  Tom and Norm were building bookshelves together.  Tom was using his trusty C12.  Tom went to hand it to Norm to use for something he could not reach.  Norm, being the PC guy that he is,  kind of hesitated before taking it.  It looked like Tom was handing him a cottonmouth and not a drill.

By the way, does anyone know why Tom only uses the Jacobs chuck on his drill?  I have never seen him take advantage of the other chucks or the fast fix.
