Festool RO125 Sandpaper

Hi everyone,

I just picked up a RO 125 to add to my Festool collection. I have a large amount of 5 inch, 8 hole, Mirka Hook and Loop sanding discs. Would I be able to use the Mirka discs on the RO125? I know some have said that the center hole in the pad is very important in terms of dust collection, but what purpose does it serve?

If I'm not mistaken the center hole sends air out and helps push dust to the outer holes for collection and also keeping the pad cooler.  I don't think the 8 hole pattern holes line up with Festool's outer holes.

Brice is correct.  If you have a large supply of abrasives from another sander you need to make sure that the outer holes line up if you are going to use them on your Rotex 125.  If they mostly line up, you should be fine.  If they have less than 50% opening your duty cycle for the sander will be reduced and the ability to move the removed material from under the sanding disk will be compromised.  A test would be to sand for a while and notice if there is much heat build up.  You can also have a look under the pad and see if there is a build up of dust more than usual.  There is also nothing wrong with making new holes in your abrasives if required.  Just remember to tape up the old holes from the back so that you do not shorten the life of your pad.  A thing that people sometimes forget is that the removed material also acts as a polishing agent.  A bit of dust haging around is not the end of the world.  Just make sure you mask up your breathing equipment.  [blink]
