Festool Router Base(s)

Just wondering - seems all Festool routers are plunge base only. Why is that?

I assume it is because a plunge base will do everything a fixed base will do - and more, and Festool isn't as concerned about offering a more budget option.

It’s a euro router thing, I believe. They took over Elu’s spot.

I was just gonna post the same thing.  Then, whine that I can't get a plunge base for my new 700....  LOL

The only thing I see fixed base giving one /sans lower price/ is more precision. That is (was) a concern when the plunge mechanism locking is not stiff enough.

With the new OF1010 having both rods locked, I do not se a point for a fixed base.

Then come the negatives. Separable spindle forces compromises which would make the OF1010 heavier and bulkier or less functional at same space/weight. There is no free lunch.

Micro Fence can't make a plunge base for the 700 because of it's design. 

Richard told me that.  That's a shame because a plunge base would be a nice feature for the 700

A plunge base can do anything that a fixed base can do, but the reverse is not true. I assume that is the point? The only "advantages" a fixed base can claim are simplicity and a lower center of gravity. Total weight is not necessarily a thing because the OF1010 is lighter than many fixed base routers.
Also, there is a bit of a debate about weight anyway. Some argue that the weight/mass adds to stability. Others say that this does not always come into play and they would rather have a lighter machine.

The plunge base for the MFK700 is called OF1010....lol
