Can the bearings that are on the Festool 8mm router bits like the roundover and rabbetting bits be changed to a different size?  I'm thinking of a situation where you would put a smaller bearing on a roundover bit to turn it into a beading bit, or altering the size of the bearing on the rabbetting bit to give you rabbets of different sizes.

I've been over the Festool website and catalog several times, and can't find any information on this, or I'm just being a moron.  [wink]

Hi if cutter have the ability to use two or three bearings they are supplied with the cutter their absence would indicate they are not designed to be used with any other bearing size.

A large number of the Festool bits here in the US are being discontinued and not on the website or catalog.  I was researching something else in the middle of the night and came upon replacement bearings that were being discontinued.  I would suggest that you contact your favorite dealer and check on the bearings.

I can't speak for the Festool bits, but I regularly change the bearings on my Freud bits. They are all threaded the same, and it is easy to switch them. In fact the Freud rabbeting bit came with 7 or 8 differently sized bearings to do exactly what you are looking to do. I use the bearings from that set with my other Freud bits where necessary.

Generally, you just need to know the size of the arbor for the ID of the bearing and they can be interchanged. There are always exceptions though...
