Finishing jewellery box

Good morning guys looking for some help for good finishing ideas for my wifes christmas jewellery cabinet. All made from pine, so any ideas appreciated. Will be final coated with a clear waterbourne finish.

Several years ago I finished my wide pine floors with Watco oil followed up with a water-based poly (after giving the Watco some curing time). It gave a nice look to the pine.

Also have this sample in barnyard red for a slightly distressed finish. Not sure if it a milk type paint or production type laquer.[attachimg=1]

I'd milk paint that piece, possibly multiple colors. Would fit the design era of that piece.

Thanks Tom,
was thinking that way as well, I think the following will work,
Stain first with General Finishes water based wood stain in Early American,
Spray with General Milk paint in brick red, distress and sand through to expose some stain in areas,
top coat with General clear poly in Flat. (not sure if satin would be better though).
Will leave the top with the early american stain finish and clear poly on top.

So finally finished my wifes Christmas present, almost had it done for valentines day too, lol but not quite.. Anyway she is happy.
Got my milk paint  spraying sorted so I think it turned out ok. Finished with 2 coats general stain then 3 coats general milk paint, distressed and sanded a little, made a black glaze, wiped on then off. Finally finished with 3 coats of general enduro poly.
Picked up some glass drawer pulls from lee valley, and finally made and fitted dividers.

Very nice work. What type of slide/hardware is that on the pull out necklace hanger?

Thx Jon, the small bearing sliders are from lee valley. They only pull out about 2/3 of the way so just doubled them up and screwed together to increase travel distance.

Very charming piece!  The milk paint and glass pulls really add quite a bit of character to a well made gift.

Thanks for sharing.  The idea with doubling up the slides is sure to come in handy for a future project.
