first domino project

this was my first domino project, september 2006

all gate and frame joints done with 50x10 dominos, frame head and door head routed to shape using the OF1400

the gate is hinged on the fence side (customers requirement) and so the frame head had to be stuctural

a storm late last year didnt cause any problems

That's very nice DD - shame the customer didn't want a matching new fence too, as the fence just looks really crappy next to your gate!!!

What timber did you use?

they wanted cheap, they got pine PAR stock straight out of merton timber's yard

the door head is a 6 piece lamination the frame head is a 9 piece lamination

Is the gate panelling tounge and groove? If so did you do it or did you buy it like that? How is the panel receedes into the outside frame of the gate? Thanks if you answer!

the timber is TGV (tongued groved and v jointed) and is avaliable off the shelf

your question seems to suggest you might not be very familar with this form of door construction

apart from it being a halfround head the door is still a standard framed ledged and braced construction.

its made in the following sequence. if you familiar sorry about teaching ducks to quack

the frame and head are 2 inch timber (45mm finished) you rout a 3/10 (10.5mm) rebate into the face of the frame about 1/2inch (13mm) deep. this is for the tgv and the answer to your other specific question

the ledges are 1~1/2 inch timber (32mm finished) these are referenced off the back of the frame, connect frame and ledges (domino joints) you now have the basic door

pin the tgv (about 10mm finished) to the rebate and the ledges. DO NOT cramp up the tgv or it WILL blow the frame apart in winter

then install the braces 1~1/2 inch timber. i reinforced the brace / ledge joints with dominos then flushed them

finally pin the tgv to the braces.

with this technique ive made made 6 doors (square heads) in a day. but its only worth it for non standard doors, standard FLB doors only cost 50 quid each incl VAT
