Floating Headbed Finish

I am building a floating headbed for a friend and would like to know what the pros would use as a finish. The headbed will be made of solid poplar and the prefered finish is a dark semi gloss finish.

Desired look? Grain-no grain? Color-tone-hue? Flat-shinny?

Desired look: Professional  [big grin]
Grain-no grain: No grain, that's why we decided to go with poplar. That and the price of course  [blink]
Color-tone-hue: They are not decided on the color. It's either black or dark brown
Flat-shinny: Semi gloss

Those headbed sell for $300 to $400CAD and using poplar with hardware I can make it for under $200. The major issue to not go with already built headbed is thast the bed is located between two windows and the headbed need to have a reversed T shape.
