I've seen bits of various kinds that were made overseas based on metric standards sold here under the closest imperial size... Festool does this too to some extent, with the guide rails: they label the 1400mm one as 55", for example, when it would actually be 55.1181102"... some retailers might list them in a confusing way. For example, if it is listed like CPO does:
http://www.cpofestool.com/festool-491498-fs-1400-2-55-in--1400mm--guide-rail/fesn491498,default,pd.html?start=1&cgid=festool-guide-rails
They show it as: 55-in (1400mm) Guide Rail
How is one to know (if one doesn't know) that the 1400mm isn't an approximation of what is really a 55" rail, rather than the other way around?
There was a satellite that burned up in the atmosphere of Mars because some of the engineers were working in Imperial and others in Metric, and they forgot to convert some of the numbers: http://www.wired.com/thisdayintech/2010/11/1110mars-climate-observer-report/
Not saying that's what happened here, but that you got so close to 5.5mm leads me to wonder...
