There is no way ball bearing butt hinges would do the job.  You will need ones like shown in the thread by Guy Ashley.  Great advise by Timtool on the brace.

Well everyone here's an update on the gates. The gates actually only ended up a little over 5' each. When I did up those drawings I was guessing the tarmac on the driveway was  16' but it's more like 11'  [embarassed]

Anyhow here is a few pics of one of the gates almost completed and a few pics of the panel details. It took me the guts of 10 hours to route all the panels. I used three different bits to produce the detail that I wanted for the gates.

I stupidly took the guard off the surface planer and ended up taking a chunk of skin off it. Its nice and flat now..  [embarassed] So keep your guards on your tools
