As a native Texan, I feel the need to jump in here. Eli, I'm not sure if every state does fly their flags at the same height as the national flag. Every display I've ever seen (except for Texas) has the state flag lower than the national flag. Also, as part of the annexation charter that Texas signed, they have the right to separate into 5 several smaller states. That would increase voting power in the senate, but destroy the representation of the south and western parts of the state. From
Texas' Terms of Annexation
"Third. New States of convenient size not exceeding four in number, in addition to said State of Texas, and having sufficient population, may hereafter' by the consent of said State, be formed out of the territory thereof, which shall be entitled to admission under the provisions of the Federal Constitution. And such States as may be formed out of that portion of said Territory lung South of thirty six degrees thirty minutes North latitude, commonly known as the Missouri compromise line, shall be admitted into the Union' with or without Slavery' as the people of each State asking admission may desire. And in such State or States as shall be formed out of said Territory, North of said Missouri Compromise line, slavery or involuntary servitude (except for crime) shall be prohibited."
I went to the US Air Force Academy which by definition includes people from all 50 states. I couldn't believe how many people still think most Texans live on ranches. Metro-Houston has ~6 million people. According to the
2005 Census Results Texas has 6 of the top 21 most populated cities.
4 - Houston
7 - San Antonio
9 - Dallas
16 - Austin
19 - Fort Worth
21 - El Paso
All more populous than Seattle and Boston. In land area, Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth are both significantly larger than Rhode Island.
Ok, I'll get off my horse and go back to woodworking. Nowhere else that I've lived (and I've lived a lot of places) has the same kind of state identity and pride as Texas. It's too damn hot for me there, but I'm glad to be from there. Much better than, say, Delaware (no offense to the Delawarans).
