H.K 55/85 Saws - Link and questions

Questions:
Is that groove width & depth being cut in a single pass? If so, that's pretty impressive.

Do these "dado" blades come in different widths?

Here's a detailed picture of the HK 85 grove cutter delivered in a SYS 1 systainer.
It's constructed of 2 separate blade holders which can be adjusted to the desired width.
Depth max. 35 mm and width 16-25 mm.
The four sided blades 14x14x2 mm are reversible and will be sold as a 12 piece set.

You always come up with the best pictures! [thumbs up]

Rather clever...reminds me of the old adjustabe dado blades minus the inserts and aluminum body. I wonder how smooth it feels in a hand held saw?

If using these type grooving machines a form of guidance must be used be it the guide rails or parralel fence. They should never be used free hand in timber. I have had a shot of the mafell multi cutter and with its grooving head I was able to take a groove 25mm by 25mm deep in oak. Now it's only a 1400w motor. Now the festool has more powerful motor it would surprise me if it can't do it in one shot. If you do grooves all the time especially on site with a router these type machines are way more efficient than a router. It's like night and day. The only downside is the cost of the block. I think the knifes can be rotated. Then when totally blunt new blades inserted and used and the price I'm pretty sure is extremely low, maybe around 2/3 pound. Maybe someone like Phil can confirm the cost of blades for the block

Hi
Always with a guide either FS rail, FSK rail or either of the fences and never free hand. It will cut the max depth of 35mm in one go at 25mm width. Will check the cost of the knives and get back. The knives can be used on all four edges and are numbered to make sure the are all the same when turned

Just checked the cost and are £59.10 for a set. Link is below.

Hi
Attached are a couple of images of the grooving block. On the side of the guard for the block is the conversion chart. If a cut at 20mm is needed then the scale on the saw is set to 70mm etc.
Rebate was cut with the H.K85 on the F.S Rail and the other two cuts with the F.S.K. The extraction is great and hardly any waste escapes.

I wouldn't get too excited about the dado feature showing up AINA. I'd be surprised if it made it through UL approval, especially with that much exposed blade.

Shane, the saw would have a lot more blade exposed wit ha standard saw blade at full depth, 85 mm. The groove cutter is 100mm smaller in diameter. True, it would be wicked looking but I think the potential for injury may be less, assuming guide rail use.

That is pretty special looking.
I suspect that some will be grey-marketing them in...

Cannot find a price for the H.K85 itself yet, but the grooving cutter block 200163 is £362 and a replacement blade set 574671 is £40 from N&B. This looks a very versatile and useful tool.

Maybe a dumb question .. can you still tilt the saw with the trench cutter on to trench at up to 450?

Also noticed these puppies run on the new keyed FSK rails .. between this and the HKC55 I can foresee much rear pocket pain [sad]

Hi
Nope - not to be used for any angle cuts. The depth of cut would be to small for any real commercial use but more importantly the guard would be moved - NOT A GOOD IDEA  [eek]

Today I ordered the HKC 55 Basic version at €251 excl. VAT, that's not expensive?!
Looks like a bargain to me!
So no batteries or charger but also bought two FSK rails (250+420), the rail bag, chip collection bag and the parallel side fence.

I'd buy the full set here as the value is good, but they're still flogging them with 4.2Ah batteries in Oz (which completely SUCKS!) Hence I'm waiting ...

I really like the idea of those smart little FSK rails. Hey - collect the full set [big grin] [scared]

I'm really looking forward to next Wednesday when I get the chance to see the H.K85 in action, hopefully with the grooving block. I haven't been so excited about a tool since I bought my Domino.

In the UK we are very devoid of machines able to take some sort of Dado stack (other than a router or a RAS) so the option of a portable machine that can be used with a 'Dado' block and can be adjusted to various widths will be very welcome.

Hi Everyone,

I saw the HK 85 in action yesterday at the Festool Roadshow event in Yeovil. The grooving is very impressive.

I am just finishing off the video editing and will post it once I can get it onto YouTube - that can take about 2-3 hours with my broadband service. That will give me a chance for a quick 40 winks !

Don't get too excited - it is the quickest bit of video work that I have ever done.

It should be up in about 30 minutes.
