When I found out Darcy (Warner Remodeling) was going to be in my backyard picking up yet another Nimitz Class jointer I invited him in to visit me at work if it was convenient. It turned out he was picking the equipment up only a mile from our shop so In spite of some really nasty weather Darcy took me up on the offer and stopped by to visit. After exchanging opinions about our mutual affection for the role jointers play in serious woodworking we had a great visit. I showed him around my place of work and was very impressed with how he picked up on the challenges and nuances of what we do (machining of differential carrier mountings for commercial trucks).

The internet is a funny thing. We make acquaintances in cyberspace and generally don't get the opportunity to meet face to face. What a shame that can be. There is no doubt Darcy is the kind of guy I would love to have living next door. What a hoot that would be. I am sure I am twice his age and we don't agree about SawStop but fifteen minutes with him and I felt like we were old friends.

The takeaway for me? Whenever any of you get the chance to connect with a fellow FOG member jump on it. I head Darcy's way on business now and then and will surely make it a point to visit him. Not only is he a genuinely nice and interesting guy, he's got all those interesting machines! [thumbs up]

that's pretty cool.  too bad the forum does not have one of those global location widgets that show where everyone is, although i can see how that could be used in bad ways as well.

in any case, just a heads up, i'll be in your area on the 12th around supper time.  i take my steak medium rare...

heh, heh, that's pretty good.  had to look up the reference on you tube--have not heard any johnny mathis in "a month of sundays".  we may not bond over mr. mathis but i can bring my opera cds.  what's your preference--italian, french or german?

Touche' I knew as I typed JM I was showing my age and a fair number of readers would be going: "Huh?"

Opera? I know less about opera than you know about Johnny Mathis. [scratch chin]

Thanks for taking the time to show me around.  Like I said, I am a machinery junky.

I love machines, old, new, broken down, computer controlled.

My shop is always open to visitors, well not a surprise visit at 2am. [big grin]

I got home about 5:15pm hung with the kids, ate dinner and then went out got the 1952 Yale Lift King fired up and put that 16" Porter jointer in the shop.

Now I am going to go out and get it cleaned off.

It's cool when you can meet like minded people to sit and shoot the tool talk. I was thinking about starting a festool Fanatics meetup group in my area to talk shop, ideas, tools and share tips and experience in person with other Festoolies.

"Nimitz Class jointer" LOL, great description. I'm admittedly a bit envious of that giant hardware....someday I'll get there.

Got it almost all cleaned up last night Greg.

Just need to finish up the fence, change the coils in the starter, mount the guard and wax the tables.

I will soon start working on a stand alone workshop. I always felt some good old iron would be nice to have in there, even thought I should start looking for some. Then I read Darcy is coming up to my neck of the woods and stealing one right from under my nose!
Geeesh. Darcy can attest to the fact it was almost close enough to my work that I could have driven a forktruck over there to get it.

Oh well, he's the one doing all the research so who am I to complain? It just shows that stuff CAN be found but you can't be lazy like me.

Looking good Darcy.  [not worthy]

Oakland, eh?  I'm over in Muskegon!  I was over in Oakland last year for a cooking competition... Totally unrelated to woodworking, LOL. I have a competition against Oakland CC in January also... Funny how some times we're close and don't even know it

Depending on which OCC campus you are going to you may be within a few miles. The Auburn Hills campus is maybe 2 miles away. Send me a PM when you come.

You have purchased and restored a lot of these jointers, do you use them all in your shop or do you sell them after you restore them?

I started with an 8" Oliver.  Sold it to get a 16" Fay & Egan 316.  Sold the 316 to buy a 13' long pattern makers lathe and a 20" clement jointer.  Bought and sold a nice 8" Clement to a buddy of mine. turned that into my current 30" machine.
I bought the Porter because it is a nice machine and it was priced right.

Bought a 1870's Bentel 16" just because it is a beautiful looking machine.

I have been putting my wife through nursing school for 3 years.  She graduates in 3 weeks.  I have been collecting and storing things that I want/need and will be looking for a building in the next few months.

Hoping to find about 8 to 10k feet.

I told Greg this same thing, I like making things for houses and such, but I really love machines.  Finding them, going to get them, meeting the people that had them, cleaning, repairing, setting them up and running something with them.

There is a sign hanging in my buddy's used woodworking machinery shop, it says "old machines don't die, they get resold"

I like that sign.

Darcy, from what I've been reading about you, those machines get re-souled, not resold.  You seem to breathe new life into those beauties!

Darcy never told you that he carries a fork lift everywhere he goes just so he doesn't miss any deals.
