my new shop has a 16 foot high ceiling. my old shop had 9foot ceilings so it was really straight forward to strap the ducting directly to it. in my new shop i want to hang the ducting about 6 feet down from the ceiling. what is the best way to accomplish this?

If you google "spiral duct hanger" you'll see a lot of solutions. Most use the rigidity of the duct work. There is usually some sort of metal strap the either hangs from the ceiling with cable or a rod.

Here are pictures of my hangers. My ceiling is not 16' tall, but this works well & was very easy to install.

I used inexpensive plumbers pipe strap (comes in a roll). Wrapped it around the pipe, bolted the strap together with 6mm bolts, then a wood screw with a washer through the strap into the ceiling joist.

Whenever I've seen this done on commercial jobs it's done with all-thread, a strap around the duct and the necessary fittings to fasten it to whatever your drilling into.

On jobs with concrete decks in between floor the guys have these long concrete shot guns (think 10-15' long) that you put a bullet and the fastener into. It shoots the concrete nail which is attached to a female all-thread receiver all in one piece. Really cool stuff and then they just thread the long all threads in from a smaller ladder. Sorry for the off-topic its just pretty neat.
