I was a teenager in the early sixties living in Germany when my father was in the Air Force, stationed at a fighter/tactical nuc base. Big K was what it was called then. We would make the long trip there every month or so as it had the biggest PX (military version of/and preceding Walmart) in Germany. Massive joint Panser/US tank base, we often would see tankers firing as we traveled the highway into the base. On one trip there we went on a tour with a cousin stationed there to the German facilities. We met an old German Sargent who showed us the German trucks and tanks. Remember this was as Nam was warning up and basically the US military was still running equipment used in Korea. All the German trucks had the huge wheels and tires common to all the modern military. I remember asking him why the trucks were so high. His reply was that the next time they went into Russia they were not going to get stuck in the mud!!! [eek] Makes you wonder about the current political situation in Europe.
