Hey JMB

Dont you site chippies use one of these??

I thought chisels were only used by real craftsmen!!! [tongue] [tongue] ;D ;D

Haha

Well sorry to say it but I often use my chisels! That trend to me looks to much hassle. If I have only 3 or so doors to hang I just use my chisels but depends on how I feel if I am hanging 5 or more I get my trimmer out and take most of the wood out on door and frame and then chisel the edges and corners to tidy up as jigs often have there limits or take time to set up and cost a lot.

Seen as were on about site chippies company I worked for had 2 contractors working for dem and they where middle aged and both of them never touched a hand tool well I never saw dem with a hand tool in der hands. They use a jigsaw to scribe skirting and everything was cut with chop saw and always used trimmers .    Well I often had to do jobs they couldn't do for example

We had oak flooring fixed just under the radiators with a round on the edge which all should come flush with the skirting but one or 2 didn't as they mest up. Well Forman asked them to cut them back flush but cus the radiators where fitted they could not be taken back up so needed workin on in place.  Well they said they couldnt do it so I was asked to do it.  I used my TS55 to cut it back in line so much then used my chisels to do the rest then my rebate block plane to clean it off the. My trimmer to create the new round over so far and then using the for mans bull nose plane and my chisels to carry on the round over to the end and then some sand paper to clean it off you could not tell.    In my opinion it was a very simple job but like you said some site chippies just can't do hand tools. I used abit of both for sped! As I could of just used hand tools but that would take ages.

Oh a chisel is all you need. BUT if you have a house that has 40 doors the jig is certainly the way to go!

hi there i am a newby to this forum but wanted to say gidday from the land down under
i enjoyed reading this thread re hinge pro
i have been a chippy for 35 years ,new homes renos repairs etc ,now work doing only reno,s and repairs replacement doors etc ,good work no pressure
the hinge pro well i saw the video a while ago was thinking got to have one of those tools! but some good points you have all raised ,had conflicting imfo from suppliers and even the company making it re what sort of timber you can use it on ,firstly they said softwood and some hardwoods then they said only hardwood so i think time has shown it  to be one of those tools which are about as good as tits on a bull , good point too how many times do you go to a demo of something buy the damm gadget tool or whatever and can never get it to do what the demostrator did ,allways
had a real hassle over in the uk trying to get someone to mail me one ,why does anyone know ?,buy stuff on ebay all over the world and get it here in around 7 to 14 days
probally glad now i havent bought one ,
i am old school when it comes to doors sharp chisel take your time and a good door clamp use a variety of hand and power tools but will still look for a good jig, carbatec make a reasonable one but hard to get here still out of stock
look fwd to chatting with you all more
cheers graeme  ;)

thanks woodguy
looks bloody cold by your avatar pic mate
intersted to know did they sell many of them hinge pro things
we get to do only the odd door maybe one  or two a week ,guess just gettting lazy was i
mainly our doors are redicote we call them, masonite pre primed either int or ext and some meranti hardwood doors
it was intersting to have read someones comment on how hard is it on the door when you do that 2nd cut with a hinge pro
i guess just wacking a slab of pine or softwood in a clamp as per the video is no real indication of how easy it is
think me will stay with sharp hand tools
cheers graeme  [smile]

Hi Graeme

[welcome] good to see another Aussie on the site.

Chippy's here that swing alot of doors tend to use the Trend Jig I refered to earlier in the thread. I mainly do bespoke joinery and make one off doors in the workshop, usually in their own frames so I just use a router and finish with a sharp chisel.

I would imagine you guys could be busy doing the refurbs on the Gold Coast when the floods go down!! :o :o

If you ever need kit posting out just let me know, easy with Paypal these days. The postage only comes an issue over 2kg then its cheaper to get a flight and carry it as hand luggage!!

gidday guy
thanks mate i,ll keep it in mind
mind you the missus she who must be obeyed keeps a close eye on the toolbox and my ebay, but i sometimes find a good excuse for ,"gee darls i really needed one of these "
over 2 kg it is probally cheaper to fly and get it ,will do that one day ,love your part of the world ,maybe not the cold though ,would like to see the heartbeat series part of the uk ,not a big fan of cities
cheers graeme [smile]
