I want a New Bandsaw

The tax thing sucks...you're in one of two states that have to pay tax on Felder stuff (DE and CA). I didn't have to pay tax so that softened the $400-something freight bill somewhat.

Just to be clear, sales tax is due on all purchases for residents of California, whether the vendor collects it or not.

Our state is just not very proactive in collecting it, so it is left mostly up to the honesty of the buyer.  ;)

Nickao,

Nice to see you posting again. BTW the brake on the Griz is a motor brake that stops the blade in 3 sec. not a foot brake.

I dont ever want to be lacking power so 5HP is a min for me. Im not going to be resawing 2 hours everyday but when I do I want the power to do it and then some. I will be resawing 8-12" oak, maple, wenge, purpleheart and many more dense as hell woods. Seems to me that this is the most economical 5hp machine available.

They made it official and it's actually on the tax forms now...

Good thing! I always like to pay all sales tax due, and that just makes it easier.

California has huge budget problems and needs the money badly. I'm also comforted by the fact that they spend every penny of my money very wisely.  [big grin]

Yea, we started this Use Tax here in Washington State too in recent years.  So, if you don't pay a Sales Tax at the time of purchase, you will be paying this Use Tax at tax season -- as chance would have it, no later than two weeks after April Fool's Day.  This is true of most state now.

Funny thing here, however, is that our neighbors to the North will no longer have to pay our State Sales Tax on their purchases here.  Officials in our northern counties are not laughing.

Nickao,

Great to have you back.

Eiji,

I would go with the Grizzly, considering your limitations/requirements.  When re-sawing hardwoods, power is king.  You can do a lot of things to help balance and true up a bandsaw, but you can't do much to help an underpowered machine.

A top notch band saw with a crappy blade is not as good as an average band saw with a great blade.

Wise... Blades, speed, feed, set up...

If you go with the G0531B, I assume you'll be in the market for a good fence.  Over on SMC, Laguna has a special on the Driftmaster for $295.

As far as the Use tax we have it in IL. When I inquired about it I was told Illinois as of now is not going to go after nor do they want to go after anyone that does not pay the use tax. With this economy they do not want to stymie any kind of sales even if they are being made to another state. There are to many companies here in IL that sell out of state and if IL started following and demanding the use tax other states may do the same in retaliation, which can put the small businesses out of business. As our biggest online presence Amazon does not collect tax no state is going to enforce the use tax(if they do they only hurt the small seller). When and  if Amazon ever starts charging tax(I mean Amazon not Amazon sellers) then the states may start pursuing these use taxes, but as of now it is an unspoken rule that we do not have to pay the use tax because it is not enforced and will not be enforced, at least not for the foreseeable future. Nor does the state want it enforced at this point. Makes sense to me.

Until they find away to collect the taxes at the purchasing point on the internet throughout the country, state to to state, I don't think it is wise any state start looking through purchases and enforcing a use tax. What they gain will ultimately be lost in small companies losing business from the people looking to pay no tax, which is a majority of internet buyers. Amazon has already said it will not share its info with government entities looking to find people to pay tax short of a massive court case and order from a federal judge. If you can buy from Amazon with no fear of a use tax coming back on you why would anyone purchase from a smaller company where they are going to give up buyers info and possibly a use tax come back on you? Can you tell I am pro small business.  :)

As far as that nice Fence in my experience with 5 different size band saw over the years I found that once you get a 1" blade in the machine forget about drift, if the machine is adjusted correctly I have never had drift, ever, when using the large blades. I find the stock fence on my Grizzly works perfectly. If I had 285.00 a bigger motor and/or better blades would be my first purchase. Just my personal preference.

Nickao,

my thoughts exactly. No need for that fence. the stock fence will be perfect and I will add my own tall subfence for resawing tall stock.

A 6" aluminum fence face(sub-fence) comes with and goes on the shorter cast iron fence, at least it was included when I purchased my Grizzly Band Saw..

Looks great.  What is the regular price?

No you are right. It doesnt come with a resaw fence but the stock fence is about 4" tall and a tall sub fence is a snap to make. Im not enthusiastic about anything Laguna. That company is just weird.

Hey Eiji,
Does that mean that you've looked at the Driftmaster resaw fence & don't like it?

Ron,
I do not have experience with the Driftmaster nor can I state that it is a good or a bad fence. I just dont like the Laguna Company and will never buy anything from them. This is my judgement, good or bad on my part, from what I have read and seen of the company, it's policies, customer service and overall practices.

In my experience and even on my not completely tuned SCMI there is no need for adjusting for drift when cutting with a 1" carbide blade anyway. IMO it would be an unnessesary and expensive accessory.

I saw a demo of the Driftmaster while down at Laguna, and I was pretty impressed. Impressed enough to buy one for my Agazzani.

I haven't installed it yet, but I see no reason why I shouldn't be completely satisfied, it's a well made piece of equipment.

Eiji, make a pro and con list. The bandsaw for you will be the one that ticks the most 'pro' boxes. Use the same approach as you use before buying a new Festool offering, if it works for you and makes life, work & earning a living easier then that is the tool to get. Being in the U.K. I have no experience of the saws mentioned but my tools all have to adhere to those criteria or they get 'referred elsewhere'. ;D
Rob.

Being able to crank the fence over the same amount time after time sure could be useful.  Since I don't have a bandsaw, I've had to cut stuff with a jigsaw and then spend a lot of time on the oscillating spindle sander.  Now I don't even have a jigsaw.  [doh]

The concept looks great & as long as the manufacturing quality is descent it should be a very worthwhile tool.
