When my battery starts draining quickly, a trick my Daughter showed me closes all the programs/apps/features that I had been using, and leaves me with just the current feature I want.  On my iPhone, I double click my home button on the bottom of the device, and it displays all the programs running in the backround that I thought I was done using.  I swipe them "up" and they close, leaving me with just the one current program.

Thanks for the info!  Imagine how excited I am at the prospect of teaching my Daughter how to use her phone, rather than the other way around!

FWIW, my iphone 4 was fine, and going on 4 years old or so when it fell out of my pocket while I was getting some wood, and it spent the night in a rain storm. Found it by telling "find my iphone" to have the phone ring. The screen was toast, but I was able to back it up remotely before shutting it off.

I remember the day I was forced to upgrade from the iPhone 3s.  My Credit Union actually forced me to upgrade when they required at least the iphone 4 to make remote deposits.  My 3s was no longer upgradeable, so when I received the upgraded Credit Union App, the only way I could continue sending my deposits on my phone was to upgrade to the iPhone 4 or 4s (I don't recall).

Ah bob I got a iPhone 4S it went on 4 tours to the sand box with me to. I got it around 2009 ( I think) I just replaced the battery at the Apple Store cost me about £70. Still works like a champ

Tottaly agree after two years their products become useless regarding phones and Ipads.

I always find when its hitting 2 years DONT EVER update the phone. Your phone will last longer. Im 100% sure apple make the phones faulty via their updates. So I stopped updating.

Every update seems to make the phone slower and slower.
ios and apps get bigger using so much memory that its pointless getting an Iponhe with less than  128gb now if you want it to last you few years.  Buy a 32gb and it will be full in no time.

Ive ditched apple because of all this dont trust them.
I had a Macbook, Two iMacs, ipad, iPhones

So far replaced macbook and old imac with a laptop. The other imac is still fine be will be replaced when its due. Ipad just threw it away i haven't replaced it with anything as of yet.
I replaced my Wifes Iphone with google pixel 128gb which comes with unlimited cloud storage.
When my contract is up im replacing my Iphone but not sure with what yet likely be pixel.

I have a strict policy of never updating. The device works, it doesn't need some BS updates that. As others I am suspicious of the updates and what they actually do to older products.
Except for when my iPhones have fallen into a pool of water, down a chimney or had a 2x4 fall on them, they have lasted more than 2 years. 6+ has more than 2 years on it and my old original 3 still works fine.
Started out with an Apple IIe way too long ago and have continued to upgrade periodically since.

I currently use a 64GB iPhone 4S that was released in 2011. I had the battery replaced in January and it's (again) going strong.

I do OS updates, but mostly not within the first two weeks after they were originally released.

I will continue to use it until it's absolutely worn out. Then I buy a new one. I do not follow Apple's cycle, I follow mine. And for now, the 4S is perfectly fine.

Same goes for my iPad Mini - it's from 2012 and also going strong - no troubles. Will also only see a replacement when completely worn out = unusable.

Buy from Amazon and if it isn't good return it. The reviews are the answer to your question. I bought one for my phone and have been happy with it. Just like new! Choose the brand by the reviews.

Im on iphone5  four times in a row. The phone worked and everytime I broke it I got the same. I dont fallow the sheep and buy the latest iphone unless I believe it has major improvements but as of yet even the latest Iphone now still doesnt warrent me upgrading from an iphone 5.

Saying that like I said in my previous comment my next phone wont be an iphone any more any way.

Bob, Like others have said,  android might be your solution.  I have a Samsung S7 edge and I've never run out of juice in a day.  I charge it overnight at bedtime. 

Someone else mentioned, on an iPhone, you can close your open programs one at a time by double clicking the home key and then swiping up on each open program to close them.  You might have 20 open programs....that's a lot of swiping.  On android there's a "close all" button.  One click and you're done.

It's a good habit to at least once weekly, power cycle your phone.  Not only will it help restore corrupt files but each time you do it, you're updating your carrier's network on your phone.

I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 for my last phone and it lasted 3 years.  Phones, like computers, become slower over time partly because OS updates by design, are written for current technology and older model's processors and memory struggle to keep it running efficiently.  Anyhoo, my Note 5 still works fine, I've relegated it to my workshop and use it to run Pandora over the wifi. 

I have a Macbook and an iPad, my .02 is Apple's gone by the wayside when Job's passed away.  I'm seeing as many OS updates, if not more, than Windows since he passed. It seems like that anyway.

I must live in an alternate Apple universe--- My iPhones work , hold a charge and don't act up after a 2yr mark.  I do shut it off each night, unlike my wife who never shuts down her phone.... [doh] [doh]

Don't buy anything until after the end of March when Samsung introduces their S8.  It might drive down the price of existing S7 and S7 Edge phones.  Both are quite good.  Nokia just released the Nokia 6 which is pure Android, eliminating all the carrier bloat-ware.  It's not available in the US quite yet, though.  I bought an "international" Samsung S7 (SM-G930F) on Amazon last year.  It works on AT&T and T-Mobile networks as well as the European carriers with just a change of the SIM card.  It will be nice when I go to Europe in a year or so.  This model also doesn't have the usual carrier bloat-ware that can't be deleted.

Bob I would not buy a $ 18 battery.  Li batteries need to be treated with kid gloves.  The wholes Samsung Galaxy Note fires were caused by improper packaging and squeezing at the factory. I would not trust some third party manufacturer for doing this.  I happen to know quite a bit on this subject.  Nova did an episode on batteries some 2 months ago--you watch  that and you will get a new respect for lithium ion batteries..
