Is the Belt Sander worth it?

I have 2 belt sanders. An old makita (which sat on a damp dirt floor too long and needs some some bottom parts) and a wonderfully errant chiwanese made Ozito. I made an outdoor table out of treated pine fence planks (recycled) and bought the Ozito (49 bucks) to make it flat. Turned her on and ran right over the top of the cord and swallowed it all up. Blue sparks and flashes every where. The belt had a dirty black burn on it.  :o Off to the underpants drawer for a quick change into clean ones Cut the cord where it was stripped and twisted it back together and wrapped a poultice of lecky tape around it. Still works good as new. After a while I discovered the best way to use it was ine handed and let it t=do the work. I started with 60grit and went to 240grit and got a really smooth and level finish with no ugly grooves. Definitely better not to fight a belt sander - just go with the flow. Now Terry how does my experience with a 49 BS compare with yours and the 1000 buck dream machine?  ;D

Welcom to FOG Sheddie ;D And the Dream Machine has a slow soft start for dummies, so it wont just take off ;D

The Festool BS 75 is actually 99% the same machine as the Metabo BA E 1075.  ;)
[...] don't know which of them actually designed the machine, and I haven't used either of them.

These two posts are very interesting - describing origins and design of various belt sanders. Holz Her is apparently the common origin of many european belt sanders - Festool, Bosch, Metabo, etc.

Belt sanders have their place but EVERY time I get mine out I regret it.  I know it is just me.  It sits in the drawer.  Good luck.

hi tezzer, i bought the festool bs-105 belt sander today in brisbane , i dont know if its worth it just yet, buy my first impressions are pretty positive.

it is a beast of a machine, i like the extra weight, i am sure this will help when sanding 1 metre wide slabs of tallow wood.

the dust bag is very high quality, but i will be using the dust extractor.

it took me a few minutes to work out the frame, i have never used a frame before, i will give it a good work out tomorrow.

as usual the manual is useless, STB, (straight to bin)!

i will look online for a decent manual tonight.

cheers, justin.
